Hello, I have posted the same thread at Einstein@home but I think now it is a BOINC issue, as I have it never had before and the first time I met BOINC was with 4.x.x. I have updated to BOINC 6.10.13 and E@H runs fine. However it is my works pc and I turn it off as the work day is over. When booting up a next time BOINC manager starts automatically, as it did many times before, but is “disconnected”. When I go to Advanced, Preferences, and then the network usage tab, the checkbox “Confirm before connecting to internet” is on. I did not do that. When I check it off, I must close BOINC and restart it. Than jobs are started or new work is fetched. When turning the PC off and boot later again, that checkbox is on again and I have to do the procedure all over again. This is the first time I have this on one of mine machines. Nothing else was changed. It runs Vista ultimate, 32 bit. Has anyone an idea to solve this? Thanks for your help. Greetings from, TJ |

First things first, are you allowed by your work to run BOINC? Sounds like a write permission problem, where BOINC (or your account) is not allowed to change its XML files. How did you install BOINC? As a service (protected application execution) or not, with "allow all users on this PC to control BOINC?" or not? Is the account you log into Windows with allowed to write to the BOINC Data directory? Your client_state.xml file isn't write-only? When you open the client_state.xml file just after you logged on, scroll all the way down, what's the value set for <user_network_request>X</user_network_request> ? Did the time stamp on the client_state.xml file change between your shut-down and your boot-up? |

Hi Jord, First things first, are you allowed by your work to run BOINC? Yes, it has already become my own, but I use it to work from home as it have special software. How did you install BOINC? As a service (protected application execution) or not, with "allow all users on this PC to control BOINC?" or not? I don’t know exactly how I installed it, just as “usual” and at the same way as on my other pc’s. All users on the pc are allowed to run and control BOINC. With the previous version, 6.6.38 this problem wasn’t there. It occurred after installing the beta version of 20 October. Your client_state.xml file isn't write-only? No. When you open the client_state.xml file just after you logged on, scroll all the way down, what's the value set for <user_network_request>X</user_network_request> ? 1. Did the time stamp on the client_state.xml file change between your shut-down and your boot-up? No, it has the date of the last time. However I have two client state files, one in the Boinc directory and one in the BOINCData directory. The latter is most recent (Ocober 25, my last use of the pc) Any ideas? Thanks as always for your help. Greetings from, TJ |

Oh, hold on... I was in the wrong xml file. Since you're using the local preferences, can you check if the global_prefs_override.xml file is read-only? And upon opening it, what is the value in the <confirm_before_connecting>X</confirm_before_connecting> line? Your <user_network_request>X</user_network_request> value of 1 does mean that you allow the network (internet) connection to be always available. What happens if you set this one to "based on preferences"? |

Thanks for the fast response Jord. Since you're using the local preferences, can you check if the global_prefs_override.xml file is read-only? No. And upon opening it, what is the value in the <confirm_before_connecting>X</confirm_before_connecting> line? 0. Your <user_network_request>X</user_network_request> value of 1 does mean that you allow the network (internet) connection to be always available. What happens if you set this one to "based on preferences"? The same, nothing changed. I will reinstall BOINC 6.10.16, turn the pc off, and restart it tomorrow. See if that helps. Because I have now installed 6.10.16 on another computer and there it is working fine. Or perhaps I can copy a few XML-files. Greetings from, TJ |

And upon opening it, what is the value in the <confirm_before_connecting>X</confirm_before_connecting> line? Well, <confirm_before_connecting>0</confirm_before_connecting> means it's off. Isn't that what you wanted? When I go to Advanced, Preferences, and then the network usage tab, the checkbox “Confirm before connecting to internet” is on. I did not do that. |

Well, <confirm_before_connecting>0</confirm_before_connecting> means it's off. Isn't that what you wanted? This is indeed what I want, as it runs BOINC automatically. However "disconnected to local host" is still popping up in the right bottom off the manager. I will do a re-install as the jobs are finished. Greetings from, TJ |

Try BOINC 6.10.17, as it's just gone public. Then when that's installed, just to make sure nothing's (too) corrupt, open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences->Click Clear. Then go back to Advanced->Preferences, change your settings and save them with OK. That way we're absolutely sure your override preferences file got deleted and remade. |

Then when that's installed, just to make sure nothing's (too) corrupt, open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences->Click Clear. I installed 6.20.27, delete and made a new prefernces files and it is starting now automatically again. I am happy. Thanks for all the input Jord. Greetings from, TJ |

I installed 6.20.27 Are you from the future? What's its release date, somewhere August 2023? I'll go ask Rom what he could've possibly put in that version. :-D |

Are you from the future? What's its release date, somewhere August 2023?Should be nice... Sorry about that. I think I had sticky fingers and lack of eye side when typing that. 6.10.17 is the running version. Greetings from, TJ |
