Today i had following problem:

The BOINC titlebar showed "Keine Rckmeldung" ( dont know the english word, maybe "no report"?), and BOINC hang up . After a few seconds the BOINC Manager Window closed and the BOINC Tray-Icon in the Taskbar dissapeared...
This happened 4 or 5 times today. Are there any suggestions what to do? Hope you can understand what i mean, my english is not the best... ;-)

Regards Stefan

What OS?
Which version of BOINC?
What type of install (service, shared, single)?
- If a service type install, did the BOINC Daemon stop?

Not sure if I can help, but the guys that usually do are going to need at least that much information ...

My German is worse ... :)

Im running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all updates on a P4 3Ghz with HT.
BOINC 5.2.13 single type install.

I hope this helps you to help me... ;-)

It is a start. But, I am not the worlds best helper :(

Tony and Bill the guys, but, lets see if we can take the next step. I did not see any red flags yet.

Ok, the symptom was that BOINC hang up. In my mind there are two possible ways for me to see this, one is that BOINC was using the modem, hung up the modem and then died. The other is that it stopped working and died.

Ok, so we need to kind of get that straight. ...

Next thing to do, is to stop BOINC, Then restart it and let it run for about 5-10 minutes. Copy the messages in the messages tab and paste them here.

Last things:

Does this happen all the time?
What were you doing when it happened.
Are there error messages in the messages log?
What projects are you attached to?
Do all the stops happen when running one project? Or any project?

Sorry, this may take some back and forth ... we have to work through all the possible things it may be and might not be... so be patient with us. Trust me, we will not give up until you do ... but, you have to do all the silly things we ask ... sorry about that ... but, it is the only way ...

There are no errror messages in the message tab, therfore i didnt pasted it in here. Its just the normal startup stuff...

1. No it doesnt happen all the time. Mostly when Boinc is uploading results...
So maybe its something with the modem. But it worked very well for 2 months...
2. Uploading results and at the same time i was looking at the statistics tab and/or message tab.
3. No there are no messages in the error log,
4. Im attachet to Einstein, Seti, Seti Beta, CPDN, uFluids, Rosetta, Predictor, Prime Grid, SIMAP, WCG, LHC, Sztaki and BURP
5. I dont know this yet. I have to look up for it...

Today the same thing happened for 3 or 4 times... The BOINC Manger hung up and showed a white window. The titlebar showed Boinc Manager (local host) NO REPLY, but today BOINC didnt closed the BOINC Manager window. After a few seconds BOINC came back to life...

When you run windows update, do you run the automatic one, or the custom?

If you only run the automatic, try running custom, look at the hardware/drivers section and see if there are any new drivers listed.

If that does not help, or there are no updates listed there, try to see if the modem manufacturer has an updated driver.

I have Windows update prepared to notify my if there are new updates and ask before download. No automatic updates...

And there are no updates for my hardware.

Today at morning at had the same thing again. BOINC crunched the whole night, and at morning i wanted to open BOINC Manager with the Taskbar tray icon but BOINC Manager didnt open a window.
After a second try the BOINC Manager Tray Icon dissaperad from the Taskbar. I was looking in the Task Manager and saw that BOINC manager wasnt working but two Predictor WUs were still showed at 50% CPU usage each... And the modem wasnt connected, so I think its not the modems fault.

I tried to restart BOINC Manager but it didnt worked. Nothing happened...
Just after a full Windows restart BOINC started to work again...
Maybe i should wait for the next release and hope that this thing is getting better... I dont know what i else should try.

Thanks for your trouble!

Greetings Stefan

Stefan, you are saying "hung up" but I'm wondering if what you are describing is a Boinc crash. meaning that boinc manager encountered a fatal error and shut down or was forced to shut down.

Also, if I understood you correctly, you stated that after you rebooted your computer, Boinc started functioning correctly. Is it still functioning correctly? If so, then perhaps it was just a transient problem, just one of those weird things that happens.

One last thing that I can think of. You stated that you have an HT processor. Are you running with HT enabled? You stated that you saw you predictor WU's running. I just want to make sure that was due to the HT and not an indication to some problem.

Hi Jim!

Yes, sometimes BOINC hangs up or freeze with NO REPLY shown in the Titlebar and sometimes it crashes. Not everytime the same...
After a reboot BOINC is functioning correctly but after a few hours working it crashes. Not always at the same time. Sometimes it works for 10-20 hours or longer correctly and sometimes it crashes after 3 or 4 hours. And it is not alway the same project running if Boinc crashes...
The processor is running with HT enabled therefore 50% CPU usage. I meant 50% for each WU and 2 WUs worked at the same time...
Maybe i should try to re-install BOINC. I never had this Problem with 5.2.13 for the last months.
Once again, please excuse my bad english! ;-)

Thanks for all your help!

Stefan

Stefan,

Another task ... :)

In the BOINC directory, there are 4-5 TXT files. Can you zip those up and send them to me?

p.d.buck@comcast.net

If you just send them as attachments they get messed up usually. Maybe there is something there I can see.

Stefan,

Got em ... and I could open them.

I did not see anyting exciting there. However, if there are still problems, my first suggestion is to disconnect / detach from all alpha and beta test projects. I am not saying that they are indeed the problem. BUt, that is the next thing I would try.
