I am running BOINC on a PC which is a test machine prone to failures and rebuilds. Data files I wish to keep on this PC are on a disk that is not the system disk.

Can I modify the BOINC installation to store and access data on a disk other than the disk where boinc is installed?

If so, How do I do it?

You can install BOINC on the data disk and it will run from there. I don't think there is a way to seperate the data files from the install directory though.

I did contemplate this option but I would loose the registry data and therefore the installation on c: if I rebuilt it.

I don't mind reinstalling BOINC but loosing all those part processed wu'S IS A PAIN FOR ME (LOST CREDIT) and I'm sure it doesn't help server processes.

Regards

No worries. Just reinstall BOINC to the same directory and all the reqestry entries will be rebuilt from the files in the directory. Lost work is unlikely.

DOH! Well I did say it was unlikely not impossible.

You run the same risk of losing data at any upgrade. Usually what happens when the queue is lost is the client_state.xml file is lost or corrupted. Without that file BOINC has trouble finding the rest of the files.

Hi, Brian - I'm not sure if this is a "supported" alternative or not, but I've learned that losing the registry data doesn't appear to cause any harm in terms of loss of work for BOINC. In fact, the next time it runs it will recreate the necessary registry keys (most of which are actually nothing other than window and column widths, and an MRU list for clients you've connected to). In my particular case, the only thing that mattered that I needed to reset afterward was the Network Connection Type, which reverted to Default from Use My LAN (I'm otherwise using default prefs and "run according to prefs").

So it seems that your idea of installing to a non-system drive and running from there actually should work. I found this when doing something similar, attempting to work out a "sneakernet" method using removeable hard drives (still working some other minor glitches out of that process, but not related to registry data).

Hope it helps!
