This is actually suggestion. It will be good that boinc make automatic backups of results every day.
Sometimes because of computer crashes boinc restart job and some jobs needs days to finish and they are finished after deadline or worst never finished. Currently I make daily backups of boinc directory.

Boinc does have a backup mechanism. It make continuous back up of the client_state.xml file. It is updated at each WU checkpoint and job completion. This files contains the relevant information about the state of WU's on the system. Even this file is backed up with an _prev and .bak files in case it gets corrupted by a shutdown while the file is being updated.

If the project does checkpoints, as it should, the WU should restart at the last checkpoint before the crash or a system power down occurred. It is up to the project to ensure it checkpoints on a regular basis.

Doing a complete system back data back up would not be very useful since the majority of projects have WU that finish in minutes to a few hours. Multicore system complete work more often. So any full Boinc Data backup would contain mostly old irrelevant information.

Note: Several project don't or can't checkpoints at all. Some have a checkpoints several hours apart. The best recovery is from project that checkpoint the most frequently.

If your system is crashing a lot, I would look into the cause of this problem and try to resolve that. Computers don't normally crash that much unless your running something like Win 95 which loved it blue screen of death.

Not .bak files. They are only made if you use a third party app such as BOINCView, or reset debts with BOINCDV.

My bad, I just check the creation date on the .bak and now realize I may have created it when editing the .xml. I also have used BoincDV some time ago. Got any suggestions for incipient alzheimer's.

get a voice/data recorder and a big yellow note to stick on it so you don't forget it.
