I like that idea! A single line in the "other options" section of the preferences.

Huh? What preference? If the scheduler is changed to handle this case correctly, why would anyone need to disable it?

I'd love to have an easier way to edit preferences files such as ccconfig.x. Any way this could be included in the Manager? It would be an enormous timesaver for those of us who want and need to tweak our settings.

I run BOINC on several different machines with different OSes, and my tired old brain cannot keep track of where BOINC Manager keeps these settings files. A menu option to edit the files using an external text editor would suffice, although having the ability to switch things on or off using a GUI list of options would be better.

One example I can give is that I want to be able to change the number of days shown on the stats tab - takes a lot of time to look up the setings, find the file, open for editing and then figure out what to edit. Checking the forums, I see this would help avoid problems such as those found in the thread at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=5810#33359.

The core configuration file (cc_config.xml) is for advanced users only. Adding its options or controls to the GUI would make it something everyone can use and something people can then abuse and wreck their BOINC with. Now you still require a level of self-control.

P.S: Can people please stop posting their signatures in this thread? Uncheck the "Add my signature to this reply" option on the bottom of your post for this thread. With thanks. Although a simple text line isn't so bad, signatures with lots of images do tend to annoy in this thread.

I would like an option to select which projects my GPUs run.
Currently using this config to get all my GPUs working.
<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

For example my GTX 480 I always want it to run Collatz and my 9800gtx+ always running DNETC without a chance of it changing.

Have not found a solution to this yet, I was trying to get two BOINC Managers with different configs using this -
<ignore_cuda_dev>0</ignore_cuda_dev>

But did not find a way of getting that to work.

So if something like this could please be added to the GUI or possible by editing config files. Thank you.

My wishes:
1. Automatic updater to BOINC Manager
2. Option to choose how long time BOINC snoozes (nowadays snooze is constant 1 h)
3. Improved CPU-time limiter, so BOINC doesn't do on-off when CPU-time is limited <100%, instead it should keep a constant load on CPU on that target percentage.

This is technically not possible, at least not that good that the app's CPU usage would appear like continuous flat line at e.g. 73%. Either the applications themselves would have to support it, or the client would have to suspend and resume them on a rather (tens of) millisecond base.

But much less coarse throttling steps than the current couple of seconds could indeed be used, while still keeping the introduced overhead fairly low.

Not sure if this has been posted but..

Adding to the feature that stops GPU tasks while the is in use. Could boinc be able to detect when something eg, vlc, is in full screen mode and suspend activity

my problem is to save power, because in france the energy cost is different :
- low price hours on 2-7H and 13-16H,
- high price others time
.
the Boinc manager preference allow only one set for all day working.
it will be good to have more . to allow multiple working periode.
and a better sleeping state in boing for the pc.

An other option will be to allog Gpu runing (or not) when cpu not runnig, somme project more Gpu than cpu, but need cpu

it will be good to allow working with Gpu with low use of cpu even out of a working periode in preference.

(sorry fot my bad english)

Hello,
i'm with BOINC 6.10.58, i wich BOINC to can to change task of project to calculate when this task in running is finish, without switch with hours (switch task: 60mns).

In french:
Je souhaite que BOINC ne change de projet à calculé QUE lorsque la tache du projet en cours de calcul est terminé. Sans utilisé les heures (switch task: 60mns).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
switch task: 60mns
milkyway: 5mns
climate.net: 90days

to calculate severales tasks of milkyway; but to calculate all the one task of climate.net wich very long. Running on server.

My wish list is,

Two options for "Use at most % CPU time":

Use at most _A_ % CPU time after computer has been idle for _C_ minutes.
Use at most _B_ % CPU time while computer in use.

if C is 0 then either disable B or ignore the value in B and A just take precedence.

Theses could effective replace the "While computer is in use" and "Only after computer has been idle for __ minutes" options and provides more flexibility. =]

Hope my wish come true this X'mas. =}

This is being questioned and wished over and over, already for at least four years long, in all incarnations of this thread (see e.g. here) and anywhere else.

The better message is, even the devs are already talking about, see also the e-mail thread following "[boinc_dev] preferences remodel proposal".
(The worse message is, "This isn't something we're going to do anytime soon, but we may as well discuss it." (from the same e-mail thread.))

I normally have BOINC set to run after my computer has been idle for a period of time, but sometimes I want to manually run it while I'm actively using my computer as well, but to do this I have to open the BOINC Manager, click on the Activity menu and select Always Run. I have to do this three times, one for CPU, GPU, and Network.

It would be nice if the system tray icon that had one option to either Run everything, or Run Based on Preferences.

Just create two batch files on your desk top with
"C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd" --set_run_mode always
"C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd" --set_run_mode auto

A minor readability enhancement - now that some scores are in the 10's & 100's of millions, and RACs in the 100's of thousands, is it possible to comma separate the Score and RAC columns in the Manager Projects tab?

I like that one. Forwarded to development. Asked for the same on the Statistics tab as well.

There are few things which I came to know about BOINC in this thread even though I have been using BOINC for over 2 years now.

1. The first thing which I don't get is in many places the language used in the manager is cryptic. For e.g.

In BOINC > Advanced > Preferences - Processor usage tab

When processor usage is less than _________ percent

Only when I had filled it and done an update did I realize that I'm saying please run the BOINC till Non-BOINC don't get to say till 75 percent. For newbies they wouldn't know.

2. The Disk and Memory tab - Disk tab :- Atleast the last line :-

Use at most ____ % of page file (swap space)

Now for a normal user who has no idea of what implications does having more or less swap space have. I still do not atleast. What one should fill and what should be taken into account, none of that is known .

3. BOINC doesn't have its integrated help. One has to be online and look for things. This is not good.

In fact in mine it says :-

"BOINC Manager tried to display the webpage , blah blah and at the end it asks to fix the environmental variable browser to the browser path. Now this doesn't give any clue as to where one has to do that. Also this error is same in GNU/Linux as well as windows.

3.

I just saw a task from seti beta that was 284 hours and it had about 22 days left to complete the project in.

So I thought, well this might not finish if more projects keep on coming in so I stopped all projects from getting new tasks.

Then I realized that if I could choose to have work units that might not make it to the finish line prioritized as time left before deadline and time remaining became closer then I would feel more calm.

So I make this request primarily for those who like me worry that a long work project won't be done in time.

Thank you for your time.

BOINC already does that automatically. And if in your case it doesn't, it should.

Adding more knobs and buttons to control the scheduler is not a solution. BOINC should meet deadlines without any user interaction.
