After the BOINC screensaver de-activates, when I return from lunch for example, my computer runs very very slowly. I have to do a complete shutdown, not just a restart, to get my system working properly again. I like helping SETI with BOINC, the only project I am running, but I need my computer operating at the proper speed more than I want to help. It just doesn't seem to release my system after the screensaver activates (I do not let it run while I am using the computer). I run BOINC to help out, but if I have to start tweaking settings, doing research, and making daily adjustments, I would rather just delete it and be done with it. Any quick fixes out there for this problem?

turn off screensaver......... screensavers can eat up a lot of stuff boinc uses. disk, ram, cpu.....

if it slow coming out of screensaver, sounds like a graphical issue. and if it does this, than it asnwer's my question.

do you use onboard video?

how much ram does the system have???

....if it is 256 or 512; your system is equal to what my employer's pc are. slow as hell for news computers in a tv station. 1 reason i wouldn't even bother putting boinc on their, and besides i can't. can run any programs as far exe.

also, what type of seti do you run....? Seti Multi-beam(MB) or AstroPulse(AP).
(AP) runs longer than MB... and if you use both thats ok.
please tell us what the spec of the pc are.
os, ram, cpu. how old it is if you know?

If you have a Nvidia graphic card in your system, you should look at the CUDA section of the SETI forum or at Ageless's CUDA FAQ.

I have 4mg RAM, XP pro sp 3, NVidia Gforce 8500 GT with 512 mg RAM, intel pentium d 3.4 GHz (p4 family), and it looks like I'm running Astropulse.

Boinc is my screensaver, so if I deactivate my screensaver, I deactivate BOINC, and, yeah, that will probably end my problem.

It's not slow coming out of the BOINC screensaver, it exits the BOINC screensaver just fine. It's that my whole system runs super slow after the BOINC screensaver has been running. Even simple keystrokes lag behind. I can type an entire sentence and then I can stop and watch the letters fill in.

You should be able to run the CUDA software to make use of the graphics card. I would think that would help speed it up even more.
I know you mentioned that you don't run it when you are using the computer, but there is a way to run Boinc as a service instead of a screensaver. This way it just runs in the background all the time - But as I just found out when I tried to lower the amount of processor time Boinc was using it drop the 2nd processor and was one working with one.
The previous posts had the good CUDA links, the one from Ageless looks like the best one to follow and you video card is on the NVIDIA (http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_learn_products.html)
Hope that helps some. Do you see any errors in your system logs?

The screensaver is NOT BOINC, and BOINC is NOT a screensaver.
There is a screensaver included with the BOINC program, and also with most of the science apps, but it's not compulsory to use it.

On a blank area of the desktop:
Right click
Click on properties
Click on Screen Saver at the top of the small window
Click on Blank, or one of the normal Windows screensavers
Click OK

Now you can run BOINC with no SS. (Or a Windows one)

Boinc runs and kills my system speed and my system is no toy. Boinc runs only when my screensaver activates and, yes, the screensaver is not boinc, yawn, big deal, but of no actual importance. I'm just using simple concepts and words to make it easy to understand the problem and you somehow managed to know what I meant (and shutting off the screensaver does nothing, since the screensaver is not boinc, duh). Your semantics are a waste of my time and I have no interest in trying to explain VLAR, CUDA, GPU, or CPU cycles in detail.

And rather than waste any more of my time with the whole thing, I'm deleting it off my system. It's simply not worth the hassle. For those of you that tried to provide help, thanks.

all you have to do is, change how much cpu to use..... i would guess you have it up in the 80 to 90 range. i would just back it down to 50%. but if you wish to unistall; that is your choice. thanks for helping with what you have already completed.

I recommend Secunia PSI: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
