I have just recently installed the new BOINC software to run SETI, but I think I have a problem with it. I had the old SETI set up to run as a screensaver, and it worked very fast with no problems. This new program certainly seems to have advantages (I like the climate prediction addition), but I can't seem to get it to run except when I run it with the manager. Have I missed something I should have installed, or is there a setting I have missed?

I would really appreciate any help as I do feel that these projects are all iimportant.

Thanks,

Lin.

The "Standard GUI" version is intended to have BOINC Manager running all the time. I have it set to launch at startup, hidden. The icon is in the dock with a triangle, but otherwise there is no indication that it's there. If you have BOINCSaver set as your screensaver, and the Manager is not running when the screensaver kicks in, it is smart enough to automatically launch the Manager, which is smart enough to quit when the screensaver quits. (Of course in this case you're only processing when in the screensaver...)

There are two other options for Mac people, the Menubar install and the CLI install. The Menubar version puts the same little "blue and yellow B" up in your menubar as BOINC Manager (although that changes to the project's icon when a project is running), but it has the very basic options from Manager added - "attach project", etc. This is a good version to install on "extra" computers, especially those of family members who think you're nuts for all this BOINC stuff (hmm...) as it is effectively invisible - there's nothing "obtrusive" other than the little icon. However, I can't recommend it for anyone who is going to be watching credits, etc. The CLI install is _totally_ invisible, unless you run Activity Monitor or "top" and see something taking up all the "% nice" - and if you didn't follow every word of that perfectly, don't even think about running it.

In general, once installed, BOINC Manager acts like any normal Mac application. You can set it to run at startup in System Preferences/Accounts, set the screensaver in System Preferences/Screensavers, etc.

Any other questions, feel free to ask!
