I upgraded to the 5.2.13 version of Boinc manager. I selected the load at windows start option. When windows starts, boinc loads itself twice. When I close one, the other doesn't know about my accounts, so I have to close it too and reload Boinc manager. I have removed the icon in the startup folder, uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but still get the same result. A glance through the registry was unenlightening.

Any ideas?

Windows does this sometimes. The reason may be that there are usually at least two startup folders. One for 'all users', the other for your personal account. Another might be that you have it installed as a service as well as it being in a startup folder.

If you would like someone to walk you through it, ask and some kind soul will probably oblige :)

mjacobs,

Are you sure that two instances of Boinc are starting, or is one of these "boinc.exe" and the other one "boincmgr.exe"? The latter case would explain the fact that with one of them closed, the other couldn't properly communicate.

Not insulting your intelligence here, just trying to clarify things. It would also be helpful if you could provide more info - OS, project(s) attached, and a copy-and-paste of error messages from the Manager window.

Thank you,

Michael

Had this happen to me a few days ago after a reboot, had one icon that was dead and the other started right up with all my projects and WUs showing. Only way I could get rid of the dead one was a reboot of the computer.....

I'm also having the same problem & just now (since clearing up the issue with two copies) checked Task Manager & I have "boinc.exe" and "boincmgr.exe"

I only have one (B) icon in the System Tray right now, though

Does this help?

Andrew,

Both modules of Boinc should be running and visible in TaskMan. boinc.mgr is the GUI, the interface window, while boinc.exe does the work of scheduling, contact, etc. There should be only one boinc icon in the system tray.

Ok. So what I've got NOW is fine & so the next thing to check is what processes I find running the next time I start Windows and have the two BOINC windows show up.....

I'll keep you all posted on what I find.

I just checked Task Manager this time after booting up & I found that I have one "boinc.exe" entry two "boincmgr.exe" entries and the empty one that stays minimized is the second one to load ie. the PID for the one that disappears normally is 672 & the other one is 2716 or something

Hopefully this is helpful

So far this seems to be a complete fix.

do you have the Boincmgr.exe referenced both in the HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run (or HKCU hive) registry key and the programs / startup group ? That'll give you two versions running.
If you run MSCONFIG (hit the start button, click on 'run' and type in MSCONFIG and hit ok) you can have a quick look at the startup tab and see what's getting kicked off...

Thanks guys!

I've got it sorted out now: I removed the Startup Item & made sure that the Value in HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run (which didn't exist, actually!) was properly named & that there weren't extra items in MSCONFIG (which I should have remembered to check myself)

Now I only get one BOINC Mgr window, that minimises itself into the System Tray.

YAY!
