Hey guys,

I've got 3 machines that I'm trying to get boinc working on, I installed the client last week and none have reported any work yet. When I login boinc pops up like it should and has work and is crunching away but I think it is closing when no one is logged in. These machines are ones users login to remotely and will only have someone logged in for maybe an hour every few days. I've tried reinstalling a couple times but nothing is changed.

From what I've read boinc should always install as a service now, there is no option for it in the installer. But there is not a BOINC service in the services control panel. And it seems the service isn't starting like it should.

Edit: Almost forgot, this is newest boinc version. And machines are Core2 Q6600 with Windows XP Pro.

When installing, did you click the Advanced Button? That's where the tick box for the service (Protected), install is.

By 'newest version', I hope that you don't mean a 6.6.* version, as these are still test versions, and a bit of a problem.
Unless you HAVE to have cuda, then 6.2.19 is the newest version that you should use.

I've been using the 6.4.5 version. I'll download 6.2.19 and try it too.

For advanced options I've turned off Screen Saver, turned on Protected and turned off 'allow all users to control'.

Still the same problem with 6.2.19. When I logout all work stops.

Please start regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup and tell me what you've got for all the keys. Do not change anything.

See this thread for a possible solution, though it implies regisry editing.

And this thread for my opinion about an upgrade. :-)

"RETURN_REBOOTREQUESTED"="1"

Did you reboot? If you did and it is still asking for you to reboot, then navigate to your BOINC Data directory and delete the RebootPending.txt file.

"ENABLEPROTECTEDAPPLICATIONEXECUTION2"="0"

If after a reboot this key is still at "0", set it to 1.

6.4.5 is the current version you'll download if you just follow the 'Download' link on the home page.

I didn't see a RebootPending.txt file. I tried rebooting again, but didn't fix it.

Following Gundolf's fixed it. The boinc service shows up properly now. I'll give it a couple days to see if points start coming in.

I found that even though I had selected the PAE option, no services were created. Looking at the registry key mentioned earlier in this thread, I found the ENABLEPROTECTEDAPPLICATIONEXECUTION2 registry key to be set to 0. I uninstalled BOINC, manually set the key to 1 and did a re-install. During install, the PAE was checked, so I left that alone. That appeared to do the trick, I now have a BOINC service running.

Glad that my hint helped, but truth be told, Ageless did say exactly the same (see bold in quote :-).
