I have been running Boinc for years now and have my first problem.

Boinc runs fine in the background and as a screensaver but if I move the mouse or touch the keyboard the project screen goes away and is replaced by the bouncing boinc logo with the message "boinc is shutting down" which stays up even when I alt-tab to another program then, having the taskbar, I can shut down boinc manager in the tray.

To get rid of it I must kill the process.

I am running v6.4.5 on XP x64. It worked fine until a few days ago. I had been running an older version and when this started I looked and found a new version was available and downloaded that. It did not fix the problem.

I have installed new video drivers but not much else.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Which project's screen saver is on at that time?
What do you mean with "I had been running an older version and when this started I looked and found a new version was available and downloaded that." ?? Are you talking about your BOINC version?

Just to make sure, on what video card does this happen and which drivers did you update to?

Can you test run BOINC 6.6.0 (available at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php) and see if it still does it with that?

It was running 3 projects: SETI and two instances of World Community Grid both doing protein folding.

I noticed there was a problem and downloaded 6.4.5, I had been running 6.4.2

New drivers were for my new ATI HD4870 which soundly replaced my 2900pro. The drivers are Catalyst 8.12

I will try 6.6, sure. We'll see.

Installed 6.6 and it still does the same thing. It finished two of the three projects from before, now doing rosetta, a new WCG and SETI. Waited for the others to finish as they were all 3 running as high priority due to my playing with folding@home GPU on the new HD4870.

No, the screen still goes from the project to a bouncing boinc logo which I have to kill to get rid of.

Running always, network always available, 75% processor, 90% memory though it never uses much of 8gb.

Let me know if there is something I am missing, I am now trying running it based on preferences which will have it come on after 5 mins like the windows screensaver setting.

75% of processor count or
75% of processor time?

I don't think that it's relevant, just being curious :-)

Both 75% processor time and 75% of available processors. Does not slow my webwork down a bit in this setting.

I guess I will be uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that corrects whatever is making boinc.scr play for keeps.

Seeing how another person has this same problem, I put it into Trac, the BOINC bug database: [trac]#831[/trac]

I tried 6.6 and it had the same problem but different, with it I no longer have to kill the boinc.scr process to get back to the desktop, I can simply press ctrl-alt-del or alt-tab and the scr screen goes away but the process does not and when I kill the scr and boinc manager processes the experiments go on. This happens even though I have selected that they close with the manager.

So I had a spare hard drive and a backup from before christmas so I restored my system from then and all worked well, I had been running the 6.5.2 version
but it worked perfectly through several windows updates. I installed ATI catalyst 12 and it still worked.

When I updated to 6.6 the only problem was that the experiments would not shut down and even when I killed all boinc processes when I shut down the pc I got a box showing that windows was waiting for process boinc to shut down.

Not sure what has changed since christmas. Been running boinc for years, not at startup as I need the speed for games but when I know I am going to leave the PC up for a long time I start the process in run always mode and stopped it or set it to run on preferences as needed. Have been running it on XP x64 for at least 3 years with no problems until now. What I did at christmas was replaced an nvidia 8800gt with an ATI HD4870 and though this affected folding at home GPU as I expected I did not expect a problem with boinc.

Please advise.

Hi guys,

atm I'm experiencing the same problem too.

I'm running SETI on BOINC 6.4.5 on two different computers.

The first one uses a nvidia graphic card(GeForce 7900 GT), no problem there.

The second one is a laptop with two switchable graphic cards and here I have the screensaver not shutting down problem. If I use the onboard graphiccard(Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset), the screensaver terminates perfectly. But if I'm running the discrete graphiccard(ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400), the screensaver won't terminate.
The driver for the ATI card: 8.52.4.5-081002a-070479C-Lenovo

Hope this helps!

Same problem, same setup as above poster. Switchable graphics on lenovo laptop. I have tried 6.6.20, 6.4.7, 6.2.19, all give the same problem.

If it's still not working in 6.6.20, then you need to report it to the developers, as per the recent posts in this thread

For those of you who are experiencing this problem could you download:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boincscr.010409.zip

Unzip the files into the c:\windows directory there by replacing the existing screensaver.

When you reproduced the issue could you email me back the following log files:
stderrscr.txt
stdoutscr.txt

They should either be in the c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 directory.

The screensaver will need to be run from an administrative account in order to create the log files.

I tried the above, and the log files were not created, yes I am running from an administrator account. When I set the screensaver a little empty box comes up with an OK button, this box also comes up right before the screensaver starts.

Did you copy all the DLL files and the manifest file into the same directory as boinc.scr?

If you did, then you might need to move them into the c:\windows\system32 directory.

Ugh, I haven't tried to do this in a long time.

I'll try copying them into the system32 directory.

I tried that and still no log files. Did what I describe with the dialog box sound correct? I feel like I am doing something wrong but I've followed your instructions to a T.

Yeah, it sounds like you did the right thing.

The dialog box just means there was an error opening up the log file. If goes along with you not being able to find the log file.

Which version of Windows are you running?
