Hey all,

I have a new install of BOINC on a system that's never had BOINC installed. When installing I chose the option for installing as "Protected Application Execution". However, when I try to do a "net start boinc" at the command prompt, I get an error stating:
"System error 1060 has occurred.

The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

When I check the services snap-in, BOINC isn't listed. The service still isn't listed even after I reboot.

I am running XP Pro with SP3. The system was disjoined from a domain recently, and put into a workgroup since it will be removed from the AD domain (if that has any relation to the problem).

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

While BOINC 6.2 would install as a service by default, BOINC 6.4.5 has the default install option set as NOT a service. You will have to tell it that in the installer, 3rd screen in, under the Advanced button, check the Protected Application Execution option.

You will have to uninstall BOINC and reinstall it.

I did exactly that and it didn't help. There is still no service named "BOINC".

Just to make sure, you followed these steps?

Can you open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup and tell me what it says for DATADIR, INSTALLDIR and SETUPTYPE?

Yes, those are the exact steps I followed in your link. Especially this one:
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/Install6-4-advanced.png

DATADIR key value = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\
INSTALLDIR key value = C:\Program Files\BOINC\

I don't see a SETUPTYPE key.

I also tried the prerelease 6.5.0 using Protected Application Execution option but to no avail.

I just spoke with the developer. He says it shouldn't be possible to not have the SETUPTYPE key.

So, please uninstall BOINC again.
Move the BOINC Installer to an easy place to reach, like C:\
Then open a command line window, Start->Run, type cmd and click OK.
In the command line window, if you're on any other drive than C: type C: and press Enter.
If you're in some sub-directory, type cd\ and press Enter.
Now type (or copy this line if you're on the same computer):
boinc_6.4.5_windows_intelx86.exe /v"/l*vx c:\boincsetup.log"

This is assuming you want to use 6.4.5 ... when you're done installing BOINC, zip up the log file and email it to Rom Walton. I'll give you his email address in a Private Message. If you send it today, he will look at it today.

Hello both,
any feedback on this? As I have similar problem - installing BOINC 6.4.5 on clean Lenovo factory preload of XPP SP2 CZ and installation does not add service into services. So it does start after windows startup. Only after I run BOINC mngr. I do not have such problem on more machines just one.

thanks for help

Are you sure you didn't just forget to check the Protected Application Execution option? See my post here.

BOINC 6.4.5 does NOT install by default as a service, you will have to check the PAE option under Advanced to get the service install back.

made it several times just to make sure. Rebooted before and after ... also uninstall/install etc. Did in Advanced mode. Same setup as for other machines.

I was not logged as user Administrator but as user with admin rights (user in admin group).

The problem is the one described above. Not a problem with starting service but problem that install process just do not add service at all. the only way how to run BOINC is to start BOINC manager which starts computing.

I just had a chat with one of the developers. Tavis managed to fix it by reinstalling yet again and eventually the check mark on the Protected Application Execution stuck for him.

Can you:
Uninstall BOINC through Add/Remove programs.
Delete the BOINC installer package you have now.
Download it fresh from the download site.
Then reinstall and report back?

Will do, unfortunately within couple of days as I won't be able to get to that PC now as I'm couple of days off (until new year). will get back to you.
I'll download installer now (to prevent future update of installer) to make sure that I'll report result on the change you made.

thanks for help will definitely get back to you.

I've had the very same problem on my Vista Ultimate X86-64 SP1 machine. I found that even though I had selected the PAE option, no services were created. Looking at the registry key mentioned earlier in this thread, I found the ENABLEPROTECTEDAPPLICATIONEXECUTION2 registry key to be set to 0. I uninstalled BOINC, manually set the key to 1 and did a re-install. During install, the PAE was checked, so I left that alone. That appeared to do the trick, I now have a BOINC service running.

Maybe others experiencing the problem can try this? It appears that the registry key is not set correctly if you modify the PAE settings during setup?

Hello,
tried to reinstall - did not help.

Tried to search in registry and yes - the problem was as described above - changed value to "1" and installation finished correctly by adding service.

Thanks both!

I have apprised the developer of the situation. He's now convinced that something is wrong (finally ;-)) and he'll look for a fix for the problem. Thanks all who reported. If you have the same problem, try DigiK-oz's solution.

Hello,

I had the same problem here on a Win2k3 R2 platform.
I did this trick and it finally works.

Thanks :)

I too had this problem on a WinXP SP3 machine that I was installing BOINC 6.4.5 on. While it would run under the installed account, the service was not running. I followed the above advice, my reinstall went through properly, and the BOINC service now runs.

You know, I've occasionally had problems before with 6.2 where the installer refused to follow the selections I made during setup( like run as service, or set up for all users, etc). Sometimes a reinstall works, sometimes I have to just give up and uninstall, which is a bummer.
