I've been running Seti@Home since before Boinc, and I just let it run to the point that I haven't upgraded Boinc for ages - currently running V4.45. Recently when I boot my PC I get an error saying that the connection to the Local Host has failed. I should update Boinc but because its so long since I've done anything other than just let it run, will I need my user ID and password to enter in the update process so that it keeps my existing stats. I don't want to start from scratch again. Alternatively, what would cause the error I'm getting? Ken G. |

You should update your BOINC anyway as the client you are using now doesn't do FLOP counting as the 5.10 and 6.2 clients do. This means that it is possible that you are requesting for and getting zero credits on Seti, giving your wingman zero credits as well. Upgrading to a newer client should be painless. Read this FAQ and keep a good eye out in the 6.2 installer for the Advanced button in case you don't want to install the new version as a service. BOINC 6.2 should install directly over 4.45, it should uninstall the older version if there are no corruptions of the older software's uninstaller. In any case, it should keep you attached to your projects. Do keep in mind that you'll need a reboot, or at least a log off/log on for the changes to catch on. And if you have any questions or problems, just post about them, or look in the BOINC FAQs. |

I think the version 4 clients are old enough that they have to be unistalled before a new one can be installed, but other than that Ageless is correct. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

I thought that only 4.19 needed to be uninstalled manually before the new version was to be installed? Apropos, I use "should" a lot in the other post, as you never know with BOINC. ;-) If you don't trust it, do make a backup of your BOINC directory first and install the new version without an internet connection. Then if anything goes wrong and your work gets corrupted, it's easier to fix that. Of course, do make an uninstall of BOINC then before you report your problems, as else it'll upload&report the work it just corrupted and leave you empty-handed. |

Thanks for the replies. I made a copy of the whole Boinc folder then ran the 6.2 installer. It created the new folders and transferred my existing data, so I'm back up and running. Thanks again. Ken G. |
