Hi

I installed BOINC 6.2.18 two days ago. It worked fine in the first 2 days.

But today after I boot the computer, I found that the BOINC service failed to start automatically, I tried to start it manually, but got error message as follows:

could not start the BOINC service on local computer Error 5: Access is denied

I tried several times and got the same error messages.

I'm run XP Pro, I did a disk check before the booting today, does this matter?

Cheers

That depends. Did it fix anything that you know of?
What does it say in Event Viewer (Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer)?

Usually you get an Error 5: Access is Denied when you're trying to connect to a remote computer without a password or you do not have permission to log on to a remote computer. Is this BOINC on the local computer or a remote computer?

Sounds like you or something else changed the password on the BOINC service. Did you try to change the password on the BOINC service?

I think your best bet is to uninstall BOINC and reinstall it. That should fix the password problem and allow the service to start again at logon.

I didn't touch the password.

I reinstalled it, and now it works fine.

What's the password on the BOINC service? Can I change by myself?

What's the password on the BOINC service? Can I change by myself?

From the FAQ:

Passwords
Q. Can I change the password on the boinc_master and boinc_project accounts?
A. Yes you can.
You will need to need to go to the service control manager and update the password to start the service (boinc_master). (BOINC->Properties->Logon)
Next you need to use a base64 encoder to rehash the password (*) and fill this in in the client_auth.xml file in your BOINC data directory. You can use a base64 encoder online, such as this one.

Do know that the passwords on the accounts are set to never expire.

(*) I did find elsewhere that it's a rehash of the password and username, but I will have to ask about that. The above I got directly from the developer.

That's what Ageless meant for you to look up ;-)

There's the output of chkdsk too!

Thanks a lot.

Another interesting finding.

When I uninstalled BOINC, it didn't delete boinc_master folder under C:\Documents and Settings, after reinstalled it, it built a new folder called
boinc_master.[my computer name]
