Message 19410 - Posted: 10 Aug 2008, 16:41:09 UTC

I upgraded all my windows clients and promptly lost all contact to them thru boincview (or remote boincmgr)

I finally found the xml and cfg files in that hidden data directory, but ir-regardess, i am not using that remote_hosts.cfg file for host access and dont want to. With 5.10.45 I was using the switch
-allow_remote_gui_rpc in the boinc windows service and that has been working fine for some time. same for ubuntu.

There is no boinc service anymore it seems, or at least I cannot find one under windows xp services. I did find some groups: boinc_admin, boinc_users, boinc_projects and I see my name under boinc_admin. I did not see a boinc_lamers group probably an oversight by the developers.

How do I get my systems back working where boincview (or boincmgr) work. I have spent 3 hours poking aroung boinc forums and faqs and cant find an answer.

I have not upgraded my two ubuntu 8.0.4 clients; is that going to have the same problem with
-access_remote_gui_rpc as the windows xp client?

..thanks..

There are two modes of install:
1. Protected, which is your service install.
2. Unprotected, which is comparable to old style single user install. Not a service.

See this FAQ for a step by step walk-thru on installing 6 as a service.

Thanks ageless - I had used that faq previously to set up both a protected and unprotected boinc app on two windows xp system. One at home the other at work.

My problem is more basic - I cannot even telnet to either a protected or unprotected boinc on a windows xp system running 6.2.x . My linux 6.2 updates do not have this problem but then they are not windows.

telnet localhost 31416 works fine on ip address 129.162.167.101 and clearly I am talking to boinc rpc

telnet 129.162.167.101 31416 fails to even connect (yes, the firewall is disabled)

telnet <anything 5.10.15> 31416 easily makes a connection from any system.

where is the equivalent of allow-gui-rpc ? Sorry - i am clueless.

Start BOINC with boinc --allow_remote_gui_rpc on the command-line.

Else see Controlling BOINC Remotely.

Edit the service settings to add that switch (needs registry hacking). Or much better: just use remote_hosts.cfg.
