Ever since client version 5.10.45 I have been unable to install your software. Each time I have to reinstall version 5.10.45 to get it to work. The latest error message reads:

Error 1069

The sevive did not sart due to logon failure.

What logon fail. Do we now have to logon every time we use the BOINC client? My firewall that came with Vista shows that It has all the permissions and of course, "service" will not work. Any ideas?

I use Vista Ultimate 64 bit with all the updates.

Try the 6.2.14 release candidate. It should fix the problems with vista. The 6.3.x versions are still in an early phase of testing.

let's stick with 6.2.14 ...
How are you installing? Protected install, I get that, but else?
Did you try to change the password on the service, or otherwise adapt it after you installed BOINC? Have you tried a reboot of the machine? Are you using a domain account? What if you go to your services applet and try to start the BOINC service from there? What if you try to start up BOINC manager by hand?

I did NOT try to change the password on the servie, I DID try to reboot the machine; I am NOT using a domain account; I DID try usuing the restart option undr service, and yes I tried restarting BOINC by-hand. Any other thoughts?

Any other thoughts?

BOINC 6.2.14 will be released to the public later today. When it is released, download it again and try to install that version. It has some minor bug fixes. If that version also comes back with this error, please report it again and I will forward it to one of the developers. I already informed him of this problem for 6.3.6, he told me to ask you to revert to 6.2.14

So wait for 6.2.14 (or .15) to be the recommended version.

Wait a moment, go back to services.msc and check what the status is for the Windows Installer service.

And where do you install BOINC and the data directory to? The default directories, or do you change them? Does 5.10.45 install and run the service correctly?

I never touched a thing...., Default, Default, Default. I have always told my clients to always accept the Default for locations.

BOINC no loner shows in the list of services, under version 5.10.45 which IS working now.

BOINC no loner shows in the list of services, under version 5.10.45 which IS working now.

Then you didn't install it as a service. Can be tested by exiting BOINC Manager, if no boinc.exe continues to show in your Task Manager then you didn't install it as a service.

Apropos of nothing, BOINC 6 can be installed as not a service as well. Just go to the Advanced option in the installer and untick the option to install in protected mode. This installs BOINC as is, not a service and needs BOINC manager to start and run BOINC at all times.

In the mean time I have reported your problem to the developers already. I hope you're the only one with this problem. As for what error 1069 is, it means that the password appointed to the service does not match the password 'showing' in the services applet. Usually this happens when you have a service running on a local account system, changed the password for your Windows account, but neglected to adjust it for the service.

This is not the case with BOINC. BOINC 6 has its own password (a randomly generated 32 character key) which the installer puts in place, both for the BOINC accounts and the service.

Talking about BOINC accounts, if you go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Local users and groups, do you have a boinc_master and boinc_project account in the Users group and a boinc_admins, boinc_projects and boinc_users group in your Groups?
