I recently installed BOINC 5.10.45 on a new install of Windows XP SP2. Since that time I have been unable to produce any results. I am not sure why.

I am a long time account holder with WorldCommunity Grid, Rosetta and SETI.

This is the first time in running the software for probably 4-5 years that I have been unable to produce any analysis.

Hardware:

ASUS mainboard
AMD 64x2 4400+
2 GB RAM
Nvidia 7800 video card with latest drivers
Creative X-Fi card

I am behind a Linksys WRT54GL via Ethernet.

Here's some of the messages:

Sorry if that's a little long.

Let me know what to do from here. I want to get back in the action.

Looks like it might be a permission problem. Since everything seems to be toast, uninstall BOINC, delete the directory and reinstall.

How were you installing? Service, shared, single? Using an administrator account to install and to run?

Also, what kind of firewall software do you use?
See this thread at WCG for a similar story.

Thanks for your post.

I am the sole user of this computer and the administrator. There is only one account.

I use Comodo Personal firewall, latest version. I closed it down during the last installation to see if it was the problem, and that did not help. I just closed it down again.

I installed as a single-user installation as I have always done.

I just uninstalled, deleted the directory, and reinstalled as you suggested.

For simplicity, I just attached to SETI.

You are allowing BOINC to communicate to the internet on ports 80 and 443?
You explicitly set them to allowed in Comodo? I mean, do read the thread I linked to, that person was also using Comodo.

The last time I tried Comodo, wanting to get rid of it, almost took a reinstall of Windows (I had to trawl though the registry by hand). You could try asking on their forums, but it never helped me much.

OK.

Comodo is so complex I couldn't really figure out what settings to do.

BOINC was listed as a trusted application.

So I uninstalled it and immediately BOINC started working (after a reboot).

So I installed Online Armor Free which seems to be highly rated and it is compatible with BOINC.

FYI.

PS Maybe someone should add this experience to the FAQ.

Thanks.

It wasn't a network problem. Something was disallowing BOINC from writing to .exe and .dll files.

Write to .exe and.dll files?

Preventing to write to .exe and .dll files is good in my book... :-D

Your browser would need to do that to save a program youre downloading. Just like BOINC :)
