I am having a problem with the BOINCManager.

I am running OS X 10.3.9 on a Yosemite G3. I cannot get the BOINCManager to run. I have encountered the same problem with versions 5.2.5 and 5.2.8. When I first install the package the Manager starts up, but it will not access Seti@Home, and it will not start up after the first run. It crashes every time I try to start it.

The first time, under 5.2.5, I threw away all the files and downloaded the BOINC download again. That is how I got from 5.2.5 to 5.2.8. When I tried the install the second time, I paid a little more attention, enough to see that it rejected the link to Seti with a message that there was an "account key missing". There is no where where I am asked to insert an account key. And on the second attempt, I supposedly created a new account.

I have been using Seti for years, and I would like to continue doing so. But BOINC doesn't appear to work.

I'm on 10.4.2, but haven't had any problems, starting with 4.45 up through 5.2.13, on iBook G3 and G4, and Mini. The changes between 5.2.8 and 5.2.13 were mostly network and connection-related - I hate to suggest trashing everything and installing yet _again_, but SETI has added some 2100 Mac OSX users in the last week, and only a dozen or so have had problems or questions (that I know about from these and the SETI boards).

If you have not yet gone to the SETI site and registered, please do so, and get the email with the account key sent to you. (Linking your Classic account as needed.) Then use the account key to sign in to the SETI site, go to "Your Account", and change the password to something you'll remember. You will then NOT need the account key again.

If you have already done all of the above, or once you have, make sure you know the password for the SETI account. Then run BOINC Manager and select "Attach to project" - tell it you want to use an existing account, give it your email address and password (NOT account key). Make a note of any error messages, warnings, odd questions, etc., anything that could give us a clue as to what the problem might be if there is one, and add on to this thread. We'll do everything we can to get you up and running!

Johnny,

Boinc isn't perfect, but it does work quite well, all things considered. It's a very complicated framework to allow your computer to contribute to several different projects, each with it's own different parameters - workunit size, deadlines, quorum size, processing depth, etc. Can you imagine how intricate such a framework must be? Now consider this, and for the moment you'll just have to take it on faith - once you have it set up, which isn't all that tough, all you have to do is start it up or stop it, everything else is handled automatically! Pretty amazing stuff, when you stop and think about it.

Regards,

Michael

(edit) - Not being one of the Mac experts here, I was going to encourage you to keep an eye on your question thread, and wait until someone knowledgable in that area showed up, but I see that Bill has taken up the flag, so The Doctor in in the House. :-)

I went to seti and registered. This time I got an email.

I had tried to do this before the first time I downloaded BOINC. Tried three times and never got an email.

So now I have an account key, and have downloaded BOINC again, 5.2.13.

Now will try throwing all the old stuff away and reinstalling.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

That's what we're here for! I'll be around for (probably) another two hours, then back tomorrow. Adding to this thread will get my attention quickest. And there are lots of other people around who can answer the 'general' questions, and at least a few other Macophiles.

This time it worked. I now have BOINC installed and seti attached.

I discovered more on the crash. The readme says you can move BOINC to any folder, but that is not true. I tried moving BOINCManager to a BOINCƒ folder in Applications, along with the readme and several other files with info on connecting, etc.

When I tried to start BOINCManager from within the folder, it crashed. Moved it back out of the folder into Applications, and it started up again.

Still haven't figured out how to get my already accumulated stats from seti to BOINC.

A question. Now that I have BOINC installed with seti, how can I complete and upload my current seti project from the old seti, without downloading a new set of data to the old project?

I had not tried that... We'll now know to ask the next time someone says they're crashing!

See the SETI website, "Number Crunching" board, thread stickied at top called "I lost all my old credits". Almost every scenario you can imagine is covered. If you can't work it out from that, post a new thread and someone will be along to help. (You have to have at least 1 BOINC/SETI credit to post in NC, but you can post in the Q&A "getting started" section without a credit...)

The data currently being done on Classic (from last week to Dec) is for "credit only"; they've already shut off the science database there, and the same WUs are being done as on BOINC. So you can do whatever you want with the old system if you want another few WUs in your count, but there's no "science" need to finish a WU. Just be aware that if you run Classic at the same time as BOINC, BOINC will get almost no CPU time and will get totally messed up on measuring your CPU speed, so it's much better to only run one or the other.

Welcome to BOINC!
