Message 17473 - Posted: 27 May 2008, 20:51:21 UTC

One of my programs, World Community Grid, won't update, even after I've visited their web page and reset my profile settings. I get messages that read 'Scheduler request pending' and 'Communication deferred'. My firewall is set to allow BOINC. Any suggestions out there?

Could you please post some 20 lines of the messages you see in BOINC Manager? That may help us along.

Are you attached to any other projects as well? If you are, do any of them have work?

The messages I see are listed in my original post. I am participating in other projects, but I get the blank screensaver screen whether I'm using multiple projects or just WCG alone.

Still humor me and please post the messages.

I don't quite understand what the screensaver thing has to do with it, other than it being another problem you want help with? Which projects? Do they have work? Do they have problems contacting home base? What kind of firewall? Which operating system? Which BOINC version?

Sorry. The blank screen occurs with Rosetta@home. It is the World Community Grid Project that won't update. In the BOINC Manager, there is the option to manually update the project. I have gone onto the World Community Grid page and increased the Resource Share from 10% to 50%. When I got back into my Boinc manager, highlight the WCG project and click 'Update', nothing happens. Adjacent to the WCG project listing is a column entitled 'Resource share' which has been stuck at 10% for several days. To the right of that column is a column entitled 'Status'. It is in this column thattwo messages appear, one after the other. The first reads ,Scheduler request pending', which, after a second or two, changes to 'Communication deferred'. One would think the projects would update themselves automatically when the BOINC screensaver runs, but WCG doesn't. In addition to WCG, I'm also participating in Einstein@home and QMC@home. I own an HP Pavilion with Windows Vista SP1, Intel Pentium D CPU 3.40 GHz, and 2.00 GB RAM.

On a normal BOINC manager, there are 6 columns, or 'tabs'.
From left to right, these are labelled:
Projects, Tasks, Transfers, Messages, Statistics, Disk.

Are you saying that you don't have a tab called Messages?
Or that you do, and it's empty? (Which would be VERY strange!)

One would think the projects would update themselves automatically when the BOINC screensaver runs, but WCG doesn't.

BOINC isn't a screen saver. It does all the calculations perfectly fine without a screen saver. Most projects out there don't even have a screen saver, only a handful do.

BOINC is a managing program. It doesn't crunch. The science applications provided by the projects that you are attached to under BOINC do the crunching and provide the graphics or screen saver.

Screen saver problems:
How did you install BOINC? As a single user, shared user or service install?

Single User: The 'Show graphics' command in the BOINC manager works only for you. The BOINC screensaver shows application graphics only for you (other users can run the screensaver but will see textual information only).

Shared User: The 'Show graphics' command in the BOINC manager works only for this user. The BOINC screensaver shows application graphics only for this user (other users can run the screensaver but will see textual information only).

Service: The 'Show graphics' command in the BOINC manager will not work for any user. The BOINC screensaver will only show textual information. (Unless you use this workaround.)

Your video card may not support OpenGL by default, in this case try to update the drivers and DirectX 9.0c version. (In Windows, the standard drivers on many video cards do not support OpenGL).

When you have the option "password protected" on in the screen saver options in Windows, this will also give you a blank screen only. This will hopefully be fixed in BOINC 6.

Lastly there is a blank screen option in the settings for the screen saver under Windows as well. You sure that's not checked in at very little time?

I can smell <force_auth> here... Did your internet connection (from you to WCG server) somehow changed since your last successful connect to WCG several days ago?

In addition to WCG, I'm also participating in Einstein@home and QMC@home.

Do they have no connection problems?

I beg to differ with you. BOINC CAN be run as a screensaver during computer idle time. My display adapter is an NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE. I am using DirectX 10.

That is NOT boinc. It's just a separate screensaver supplied with the boinc application, which just happens to say BOINC. (Or something similar. Never used it.) Just as some projects supply screen savers.

BOINC itself is a separate arrangement, and doesn't care one way or the other whether or not a screen saver is also being used, or what it is.

ALL screen savers are run and controlled by Windows.

To add to this, you can even set a Windows screen saver to run while BOINC has the science application run in the background.

Yes, BOINC has a screen saver part encoded, but it isn't necessary to use it.
If you tell Windows to use no screen saver at all, BOINC will run as well. So BOINC isn't a screen saver, or maybe better said, BOINC doesn't solely allow applications to work while the screen saver is running. It does it at other times as well.

In BOINC 5, if you install it as a service, you don't even get the screen saver if you don't use a loophole security workaround in Windows. It'll still run all the projects you're attached to, though.

Selecting 'Copy All Messages' directs the files to the Clipboard. I have no idea where the Clipboard is in Windows Vista. It isn't under Accessories or System Tools. Running Search produces nothing. By selecting 'Copy Selected Messages' also sends the copies to the Clipboard. Right click on any individual message doesn't result in 'Copy', 'Paste, or anything else. I tried control+c and was abler to control+v onto my Notepad. Here it is:

I just tried to update World Community Grid. The resource share remain the same - 10.

Here are the messages:

Could you please post some 20 lines of the messages you see in BOINC Manager? That may help us along.

Are you attached to any other projects as well? If you are, do any of them have work?

This is wierd. I uninstalled BOINC (installed from file downloaded grom BOINC web site.

I then went to the World Community Grid web site and downloaded the WCG version of BOINC and installed it.

Now the rosetta@home program is displaying the graphics correctly.

Go figure.

Still humor me and please post the messages.

I don't quite understand what the screensaver thing has to do with it, other than it being another problem you want help with? Which projects? Do they have work? Do they have problems contacting home base? What kind of firewall? Which operating system? Which BOINC version?

Selecting 'Copy All Messages' directs the files to the Clipboard. I have no idea where the Clipboard is in Windows Vista. It isn't under Accessories or System Tools. Running Search produces nothing. By selecting 'Copy Selected Messages' also sends the copies to the Clipboard. Right click on any individual message doesn't result in 'Copy', 'Paste, or anything else. I tried control+c and was abler to control+v onto my Notepad.

Next time, just use the buttons on the side of the Messages tab. Select any individual message, then click the copy selected messages button will place it in the clipboard.

Right clicking->Paste, or control+v will then paste it in any place where you can put text, be it in Notepad or an answer window here.

If you want to choose all messages, just use the copy all messages button.

See this image for those buttons.

Now then. The problems:
5/28/2008 4:03:14 PM||Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC
5/28/2008 4:03:14 PM||OS: Microsoft Windows Vista: Home Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.00.6001.00)

By default Vista does not like it that programs that write to disk are placed in the C:\Program Files\ directory. See this FAQ for options where to put it instead.

Leaving it in C:\Program Files\ will only get you more and more errors like the one you got for Rosetta already.
5/28/2008 6:24:12 PM|rosetta@home|Computation for task t395_1_CASP8_1_t395_1_aa2oq2a_9_0001_0001IGNORE_THE_REST_idl_3587_2723_1 finished

Second problem is the screen saver. Having graphics and a screen saver is hit and miss under Vista. Blame the OS. Some projects will show it without problems, others just refuse. This will hopefully be fixed in a version of BOINC 6.

As for the original question, you still have work for WCG. So BOINC decided it won't need more at this moment.

Well, at least in this example, your BOINC client communicates with WCG just perfectly. Possibly the project was not accesible back then.

Words "Requesting 0 seconds of work" mean that the client did not consider it necessary to ask for new work from WCG. Depends on the resource share, amount of cached work, art of work done previously, and many other factors.
