From the CPDN - News and Announcements thread:

Submission of new Weather At Home batch (HadAM3P_EU workunits)

These new workunits are designed to simulate the period December 2010 to November 2011. They will be forced using a new sea surface temperature data set (Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis [OSTIA]). This data set has a high spatial and temporal resolution, which we hope will improve the simulation of storm tracks. The results from this experiment will be used to investigate the extreme weather events of 2011 and how such events are changing in response to climate change.

Looks like CPDN has run out of upload disk space again. I have uploads backing up on my machine with BOINC saying server is out of disk space.
Wed Oct 17 21:00:32 2012 | climateprediction.net | Started upload of hadam3p_eu_2t3m_1981_1_008219409_0_9.zip
Wed Oct 17 21:00:37 2012 | climateprediction.net | [error] Error reported by file upload server: Server is out of disk space
Wed Oct 17 21:00:37 2012 | climateprediction.net | Temporarily failed upload of hadam3p_eu_2t3m_1981_1_008219409_0_9.zip: transient upload error
Wed Oct 17 21:00:37 2012 | climateprediction.net | Backing off 2 hr 16 min 14 sec on upload of hadam3p_eu_2t3m_1981_1_008219409_0_9.zip

I have seen no post here saying when this will be fixed.

A discussion at RealClimate on much larger scale regional climate change v.v. a paper by Deser et al 2012, mentions CPDN at bottom.

http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2012/11/stronger-regional-differences-due-to-large-scale-atmospheric-flow/

p.s. The ENSEMBLES project did involve a “grand ensemble” (climateprediction.net); however, this has so far not been used extensively for describing local and regional climate. The grand ensemble has been more appropriate for describing the global mean state and large-scale phenomena (link to experiments).

Some will have learned of the slower moving Rossby waves and shift of the jetstream, moving polar air further down, pushing warmer air further up... the result seen in record Arctic melt as well as mass balance loss of the icesheet on Greenland. Maybe Miles Allen would like to play his harp more loudly. Hold your socks up, the next big El Ninô is going to cause some reverberations.

CPDN servers seem to be down. Not sure if this is in order to do some work or for other reasons.

There was mention over there (on their message boards) about an impending upgrade of their BOINC software as they had a fairly old version.

It seems there was an unexpected and unprotected power outage over the weekend and folks there are taking advantage of the down time to do some long deferred maintenance.

Thanks, I wondered if they were doing the upgrade of the BOINC server software which has been talked about for a while.

Message from the ClimatePrediction.net Project Team:
CPDN Unscheduled Downtime - Fire in local electricity substation
Our apologies for the unscheduled downtime of the project over these last few days, unfortunately the facilities hosting the servers of ClimatePrediction.net suffered a number of consecutive power outages over the weekend these were the result of a fire in the electricity substation for the area.
Over the last few days project staff have been working to stagger the restoration of services. The CPDN BOINC back-end service has now been restored and uploads should now be proceeding.
We thank you for your patience over these last few days as the project staff have been dealing with this issue.

Submission of new HadCM3N CO2 ramp workunits

by abowery » Thu Dec 20, 2012 5:48 am
We have just submitted a new batch of HadCM3N workunits. These workunits build off a balanced subset of perturbed model parameter combinations used in the HadCM3N-CHAAOS experiment previously, but include an 80 year ramp up of CO2 forcing at 1% per year. These experiments are the precursor to future geoengineering experiments with HadCM3N investigating the effects of these various forcings on the hydrological cycle. Many thanks once again for volunteering to run these models, your input is invaluable to us!

Release of new Weather At Home EU region workunits

by Andy Bowery » Chief software developer » Thu 31 Jan 2013

Hi,
I have just released a new set of workunits, this is the first of two batches.
This is using a new type of ancillary file (supporting file).
The first study that will be performed with the analysis of the results from these two batches
will be on the Autumn rainfall in the UK in 2012, and also potentially a study of the 2012 summer in the US.

Many thanks for running these,

Andy Bowery

Andy says:

New project funded - Attributing impacts of external climate drivers on extreme weather in Africa (ACE-Africa)

The CPDN team has been awarded funding for a three year project to implement a new regional climate model within Weather At Home to study the extent that climate change is affecting the magnitude and frequency of the occurrence of extreme weather events in Africa, as well as the impacts of such extreme weather events on river flow and crops.

Given limited progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and uncertain potential for adaptation to many impacts, attention in vulnerable regions and sectors is turning to the question of loss and damage. Who should bear the costs of human influence on the climate that cannot be neutralized by adaptation? So far this debate is lacking robust estimates of what these costs are. We propose to compile exemplary inventories of the impacts of such extreme weather events in the context of other drivers of regional environmental change in different regions in Africa.

To reach the aim of this project, to quantify the link between a range of external climate drivers and observed high-impact weather in Africa and assess the implications for climate impacts, we will be working with scientists at the University of Reading and researchers working on climate impacts in Oxford. Thus bringing together experience in event attribution and regional modelling from the CPDN team, research into high-impact weather in Africa from Reading and experience in modelling hydrological impacts of changing climates from the School of Geography and the Environment at Oxford University.

CPDN main project

I am afraid we have been forced to take the independent climateprediction.net message board (the phpbb forum) offline for investigation and maintenance. On the evening of Wednesday 20th March a hidden iframe redirect was found on a number of pages on that message board. We are currently looking into this security issue. The main portion of the CPDN website is also hosted on this server, and so this portion of the website is also offline. We hope to resolve this issue soon and restore normal services.

This problem does not affect the availability or download of climate models and the upload servers are available as usual.

CPDN main project

The problem explained in the last post which has made it necessary to shut down some climateprediction.net server programs has caused an additional problem that has just come to light.

It is possible for new members to join the project, but at the moment it is not possible to attach computers to climateprediction.net. If you cannot attach your computer you cannot to download new climate models for the time being.

If you are affected by this problem you can join other projects to keep your computer busy. In BOINC Manager in the Tools menu select Attach to project and then choose a project.

CPDN Scheduled downtime: 2- 5 Aug 2013

The server room in which CPDN resides is due to be shut down for electrical testing on 2 August 2013. The testing will take place over the weekend, and CPDN servers will be brought back online on 5 August 2013 (assuming everything goes to plan).

There will be NO CPDN service during this time from any Oxford machines:

ClimatePrediction.net
Climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk [this forum]
cpdn-upload2.oerc.ox.ac.uk
charybdis.oerc.ox.ac.uk

uploader.oerc.ox.ac.uk
uploader1.atm.ox.ac.uk
cpdnbeta.oerc.ox.ac.uk
seacourt.oerc.ox.ac.uk

trillionthtonne.org

...and any others that I may have forgotten.

Unfortunately I will be on annual leave on 5 August, so I will have to leave the turning on to Mr Bowery and our diligent IT staff.

Hi Chaps,

Climateapps2 crashed over the weekend with another disk error.
She is back again now, but still 'at risk' because I don't trust her raid drives any more.

I have a meeting to arrange running in a replacement, tomorrow. The replacement will probably take a couple of days to set up.

Then on Friday, the project will be taken down again, for the electrical shutdown.
Then on Monday it will be brought back online by Andy and our IT staff, because I will be sunning myself in France for two weeks.

It would seem they ran into snags with the server room work as the site is still seeming to be down. Can somebody with the project post some update on how things are going??
