Hello all, I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue. I am running WinXP SP2 and four projects (Seti, LHC, etc, etc...). I turned Fast User switching off a couple of days ago, and now none of the screensavers work at all. I would guess that it's some sort of a user permission issue, but I have no idea. I have the same issue on my laptop (also XP).

Any suggestions?

(p.s. I'm normally a forum searcher before I post, so I'm sorry for not scouring the forums to look for my answer. I looked in the stickies and the first page, but I'm super short on time today.)

Thanks in advance.

-P

Yup, that appeared to do the trick. Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, I sort of require a screensaver password. Anyone have a suggestion for remaining secure while processing data in the name of science?

Don't run the screensaver version, or run as a service

I'm sorry, I meant, to say, "Any way to run the pretty eye-candy on my super-awesome video card while still crunching data and remaining secure?"

I'm able to keep crunching data regardless of whether the pretty screensaver works. While I realize the eye-candy screensaver portion is totally materialistic and selfish, it's also likely the primary reason that BOINC has been so successful and SETI@home in particular is so popular. I would like it to work, so if anyone has any tips, that'd be lovely. If not, I suppose I'll keep crunching data until I get sick of watching BOINC bounce around my screen, and then I'll go find something more aesthetically pleasing for my screensaver, and just run it in the background as William suggested.

Now that I've had my little rant, I will try running BOINC as a service to see if that works before giving up on the screensaver goal. (I assume there's some info here on how to do that, or it's relatively intuitive for the computer-savvy)

Thanks again for the help. I'll keep you posted.

You don't need to run the BOINC screen saver per se. Any screen saver will do.
The fix for the secure screen saver should come with BOINC 6, but only as long as projects change over to the new format of having a separate graphics/screen saver application.

At this moment the graphics/screen saver is built in to the sciience application. While BOINC 6 will run BOINC pre-6 compliant applications and show their graphics, it will need the separate graphics application to do what you want.

No time line yet on when BOINC 6 will be released to the public.

Groovy, thanks for that info. I look forward to the release (and the subsequent wait for devs to catch up).

Thanks again for all the help. I'm still going to try to hack at it a bit to make it work. If I come up with something that works, I'll let y'all know.

Store an MPEG of the 'show graphics' screen, then run that as your screensaver :-) (OK, so that's cheating, but who'd notice? :-) )
