Hi all,

I have a question regarding privacy with Boinc. This is my situation.

I just started my new web design company and I typed my name in a Google to check for a results.

1st result is from LinkedIn, not perfect but thats OK
2nd result is from Boinc, hm... again thats OK
3rd result is my company website, that's what I want to see

... and then I have like a 30 results from Boinc all of them with a same statistic, MY NAME, and every result is from different Boinc country website.

Now, I really want to continue donating my computer time to Seti@Home program, I'm a member since 2001, but if this is going to result by flooding Google with my name and statistics so that my business and my privacy are jeopardized than I will really consider deleting my account (if this is going to help at all).

My question is: Is there an option to prevent Boinc from publishing my statistics online? I spent a lot of time trying to solve this but no luck so far.

Thank you in advance,
GMan
disappointed Boinc & Seti member

Sorry to sound negative, but if you truly want privacy, then do not use the internet at all, don't use any electronic 'ways of live' and don't show up in the white pages or yellow pages.

As for any 'stuff' about you being available out there, most of it is what you wrote by yourself. Things as your IP address and computer name(s) aren't available on the internet. Unless you posted about them.

Example given, if any of us look you up at Seti, the only thing we can find out is what computer you crunch with. Not from what internal or external IP address it talks to Seti. We don't see the host's network identification name either. Only you can see that.

Depends on your objective.

If the name you are searching on appears in a message board post, then probably not possible for you to 'ungoogle' it , unless you could convince each project to delete the information from the post. You might try approaching the project administrators directly, but even should you succeed, it could be cached by google or other archiving type web sites.

If the name that you are searching on is your project account name, then you can just change it at the projects and adopt a boinc nickname used in place of your real identity. The nickname is then propagated to the internet.

NYT, july 21, 2008, page 13:

The IRS has, based on a landmark ruling obtained from the 3rd circuit court, send out a tax assessment to a person or persons hither forth known as 'GMan' for filing tax forms incorrectly omitting declaration of non-deductible items for electricity cost used on business computers in search of Extra Terrestrials. Furthermore a portion of the D&A for the computer hardware as well as pro-rata maintenance cost and facility cost for the space used by said hardware were not properly specified. Moreover further adjustments are expected based on the ongoing valuation of goodwill and intangibles.

The 135 page ruling can be found in http://this.pdf files (registration to the NYT website required).

I understand your concern but as the other member said, the internet is far from anonymous. Remember it's just statistics and nothing personal they're gathering from your computer. I wouldn't worry about it.
