I just upgraded BOINC from 5.4.13 to 5.10.45 on my Windows 2000 Small Business Server SP4 (this is on a Dell PE2600). The upgrade was via a straight install over the previous version into the same folders, as a single-user install. It appeared to be successful, as my projects and tasks were preserverd and didn't miss a beat.

Prior to the upgrade, I got graphics that cycled through the various tasks. Now, I only get the text version of the screensaver, though I can display the graphics for each task within BOINC manager.

The BOINC screensaver necessarily has "password on resume" checked. If I uncheck "password on resume", the screensaver will show graphics. I have tested this with "go to blank" both checked and unchecked; "minutes" is set to 5 (i.e., non-zero).

So... why did screensaver graphics work with a password under 5.4.13, but now I'd have to take off the password? I really don't want to do that.

The screensaver password has never worked reliably on all machines, there are some machines where it has worked on particular versions, and other machines where the same versions don't work. Try turning off the screensaver (set to 'blank' instead). It does nothing useful except wasting CPU time which the Boinc science applications could have been using instead.

Actually the SS did serve a purpose in this case, wasted cycles notwithstanding... I could easliy see from another room whether the server was still alive (because of glare, that's not as easy with just the logo and text).

I suppose I could fall back to the older version for now. I'd also be willing to test a patch or search for boundary conditions.

Regrettably the mantra [like the one of MikeMarsUK] was heard 1 too many times. The screensaver has a sales purpose. The CPDN version is a CPU cycle hog, but that does not apply to many.

It's really how the ownerships lie during the installation and if the screensaver is started by same to allow it access to the BOINC processes. It has yet to fail on me except on Vista and when doing a service install and than still i get a password working BOINC logo with progress info.

AND, the BOINC screensaver has an option to switch to a blank screen after X minutes, mostly because some graphics are rather static it being a CRT protection measure, but also, after X minutes the energy saving mode kicking for those who have configured that as in "no-one there to watch it".

As for fixes, BOINC 6 is supposed to give permanent solution. Someone pointed out a few days ago that the graphics set up, previously not going to be backward compatible with Pre 6 science graphics, is in fact going to be just that. So we'll see when the first Beta's come out which fixes to include the Non-Graphics experience on Vista.

Stick with 5.4.13, certainly if you're not crunching at WCG where 5.2 is the minimum for security reasons.... they're the only one using SSL/HTTPS in their comms. Also 5.8 and up use compression in transmission, so without bandwidth limitations, stay where you are.

Thanks for the good advice! I'll revert to 5.4.13 for the time being.
