Hello,

Why does BOINC (not it's projects) have an option on it's preferences web page for setting it's "Resource share" percentage? Weaving this setting into the project share percentages has no apparent effect other than complicating the share percentages of it's projects. For example, this is how I have set my preferences for each on the web:

BOINC 8%
Einstein 1%
LHC 90%
SETI 1%

Now my BOINC manager 'Projects' tab shows:

Einstein 1(1.09%)
lhc 90(97.83%)
SETI 1(1.09%)

There seems to be no benefit in changing BOINC's default 100% whatsoever.
What, in the name of efficiency, is BOINC's "Resource share" setting for?
I was under the impression that it would give time for client to host communication and was the 'right' thing to do but it just stays out of sight while messing things up!
Thank you in advance for any help explaining this seemingly needless feature.
Yours relentlessly,
Guy

The forums here are for BOINC by itself, for you to post at when you have problems with all parts of BOINC, be it the client, the GUI or the underlying server software. We're using the same forum software as all the projects because it would look a bit strange if we'd use phpBB forums, for instance.

The forum software is included in the package of BOINC that you can download and compile.

So you have all the options available under your account that you have on the projects as well. The only difference is that we're not giving out work through this site. BOINC Alpha does, albeit for testing purposes only.

Resource shares are not %s.

Your computer is attached to 3 projects with weights of 1, 1, 90 or resource fractions of 1/92, 1/92, and 90/92. If you had a second computer that was only attached to the first two projects, they would have weights of 1, 1 or 1/2 each. I am assuming that you changed it back to something like 1, 1m 98.

I have resource shares running from a low of 1e-9 to 1000 on the various projects I am attached to. I have 11 machines that have different capabilities that therefore carry a different mix of projects. My least capabable machine carries a set of 6 projects that all carry a weight of 50. My most capable machine carries the full set of more than 50 projects...
