Are there known problems with Boincmanager or Client running on PC with Windows Server 2008 "Longhorn"? Yesterday I have an error with 5.10.40. The manager and the projects were stopped, no project was visible in the manager, for about three hours the computer was not working at any WU. I never had similar problems with developing version 5.10.39 or lower. |

What was the error that you got? 5.10.40 being an alpha version, therefore potential to crash = high, it would be nice to have more information. So please tell what the error was and what messages you had in the messages tab (look in stderrdae.txt and stdoutdae.txt in the BOINC (Data) directory) at the time of the crash. |

There is no error Number or error message in the log files, the manager had only a red point in Windows-Tray. |

There is no error Number or error message in the log files, the manager had only a red point in Windows-Tray. Can you check Event Viewer then? See if there's a mention of something happening in the Application log? |

That's actually quite interesting... There were changes about network communication (in particular uploads) on 5.10.40. I'll send your log to the devs. EDIT: was there anything in stderrdae.txt? |

was there anything in stderrdae.txt? YES, now I found something. http://rapidshare.de/files/38516318/stderrdae.txt.html |

was there anything in stderrdae.txt? I jumped through the dozen annoying hoops RapidShare has, and posted it to a pastebin: http://www.pastebin.ca/895306 |

Please test BOINC 5.10.41 and see if you can reproduce it. |

Yes, I can. The same at 8:06 GMT+1. http://www.pastebin.ca/896145 stderrdae2 http://www.pastebin.ca/896148 stdoutdae2 |

OK, I talked to the developer. He's trying to reproduce it, but wants it reproduced on a Windows XP machine. Your problem seems to be ASLR, which is only available on Windows Server. You said you had no problems with 5.10.39? Could you retest that theory, by uninstalling 5.10.41 and reinstalling 5.10.39? |

OK, I talked to the developer. To clairify, the problem isn't ASLR specifically, it just changes the EXE and DLL load layouts on every execution. It just makes it harder to debug since you'll get a different set of addresses for each crash. Even with the same bug. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

I am trying a stress test with different configurations. It would be easier if you can watch the clients in realtime on a system with a fast ethernet connection. Developers can get a free evaluation copy of Windows Server 2008 Release Candidate by downloading from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/bb687945.aspx On machines with 2GB RAM it works fine. |

I have been asked to join this topic as I am having what appears to be a severe problem with my Longhorn 64 bit server in processing BOINC workunits. Well, there are NO error indications of any kind, it's just that Einstein work units take an unually long time to process (and maybe the same is true for other projects.) On this system (1096521), which is called 'Quad', there are 4 cpus running at rated 2.40 GHz, and 5 gig of RAM. The Longhorn version is 06.00.6001.00. I guess I should also tell you that I am using BOINC 5.10.30. A typical Einstein work unit takes upwards of 185,000 cpu seconds on this system while they take far less time (about 85,000 cpu seconds) on my dual processor 3.0 Ghz systems running Windows 2000 server. I am willing to leave Longhorn on the system for awhile if I can be of assistance to you in resolving potential problems by using it, but sooner or later I will replace this OS with Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS as I must have access to the full 5 gig of RAM for some models I have built. |

Hi James, Thanks for registering here. Welcome to the BOINC forums. I've let Rom know you're here and why. |

Is Boinc working 4 WU together, on every CPU one Einstein WU? Did you measure the RAM-Performance? Dualchannel wouldn´t run with an uneven Number of Modules. You should reset the projekt to get the newest application. A project which provides 64-Bit applications may be better in performance on a 64-Bit Operating System with 64-Bit Boincmanager. |

Is Boinc working 4 WU together, on every CPU one Einstein WU? I run LHC, SETI, QMC and Einstein projects 24/7 as part of my shakedown of this system. I am willing to test a 64 bit BoincManager. (The RAM consists of 2-1/2 Gig sticks and 2-2 Gig sticks.) |

... In many cases there will be very little difference in performance (just a few % one way or the other due to the extra registers available). There are a small number of projects which have a big difference in performance, for example, APS@Home. Augustine has a full list. |

You can also dowload and run CPU-Z http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php . Menue items "Memory" and "SPD" (all slots) would help. The manufacturers of Mainboard often provides information about chipset and bios, if you want to use the full 5 Gigabytes. 64-Bit Enterprise or Datacenter Editions of Windows 2008 are able to use up to 2048 Gigabyte RAM. |
