I miraculously was able to convert from SETI 3.07 to BOINC without too much trouble. But, can I no longer view the progess status (how much time and units processed to date) and the graphics as before? Under the WORK tab, "Show Graphics" is subdued and therefore not operable. Is there a way to change a setting to get around this?

This BOINC deal seems vastly overcomplicated. What's the advantage? It certainly isn't for the volunteering user!

I also have the same problem. With this new BOINC, will we no longer be able to have the screen saver for SETI, that we had for so many years. Like the original person that posted to this subject, when I click WORK tab, Show Graphics doesn't appear darkened, so that I can choose it, to show graphics.

Re: graphics
One can have a lot of different projects / wus running under BOINC, and you need to select which one to display.
Pick a project, and clink on a wu. The graphics link should then work.

Not sure about the screen saver, as I don't use one; it takes up cpu cycles.
There used to be an option in BOINC V4.* in the setup process about setting the ss to default on/off.

Assuming Windows, as you didn't say - right-click desktop, properties, screen saver, select BOINC. If Mac, System Preferences, screen saver, BOINCSaver. If Linux... I dunno.

Did you by any chance install BOINC as a service? By default the Service Install doesn't allow for graphics or the screensaver to work. There is a work-around though.

Now, the other thing is:
The Classic screensaver only worked under the Classic application. It was built in there. BOINC uses the boinc.scr screensaver for Windows. It's a 3D OpenGL screensaver, so make sure your videocard can do OpenGL!

You set your graphics preferences at the Project's preferences, while you tell Windows to use the screensaver through the normal way. Make sure it is pointed to the BOINC screensaver, not to any of the Windows 3D screensavers.

Then once it is running, you'll notice it either to be cool, or yuck. If you think it's yuck, then no, you still can't get the old screensaver back. But you can emulate it. :)

Thanks for everyone's help. After the first data set was completed and retrieved a new one, I clicked on the new set being worked on and the buttons for "Show Graphics" came on. I clicked it and did indeed get graphics. But, it's very lame compare to the SETI 3.07. Also, nowhere am I told of the running count of units I have done over the past 4 years (3050+ so far). Have they been lost?

I didn't install BOINC as a service.

I checked my preferences on the account and it is set to SETI@HOME classic.

XP is pointed to the BOINC screensaver.

When I test the screensaver it works fine showing those cool graphics. When Ilet it go to the screensaver automatically I get a nice blank screen.

The screensaver is one of the cool things about SETI@HOME. I'd really like it to work.

Would running it as a service help?

OK.. having played with it a bit I have found a couple of things.

1) If you don't highlight thr project and select graphics locally selecting them on your account preferences on lin ewill not work.

2) If you have your screensaver set to require a password the graphics will not work. If you take the password off they work almost immediately.

I like them as compared to the old one graphics but the password thing is bothersome. I don't have an issue now but it could become one

No credit has been lost, for details see just about any thread at the SETI site, or look under "Your Account", again at SETI not BOINC, or read the email about SETI Classic closing... The Wiki has instructions on how to modify the SETI screensaver settings to look more like Classic - there are a lot of options available.

I got the screen saver to work, and I really like it. But I noticed on the screen saver, my work units are 000. It seems my work units didn't transfer from the old SETI program to this one. Any ideas? Thanks.

Go to your Seti Account, scroll down to SETI@home classic workunits (as of 15 March 2005);

It was a snapshot made of the Seti Classic database on the 15th of March 2005. Seti/Boinc cannot update the Classic database in realtime, as the whole Classic database needs to be offline to make a snapshot. So the next and last update will be done once Classic shuts down.

You start from zero credits in Seti/Boinc. Read this FAQ in the Wiki on that. The credits in Classic aren't compatible with the credits in Boinc. So the old ones won't be added to the new ones, ever.
