Maybe someone can help. I had 5.10.20, and realized that if I did not start the manager, i had no icon in the systray, and nothing running. I do not want to have to start BOINC evert time I boot. I went back tp 5.18.6, re-booted, and it came up without me starting it. I would like to be up to date, can anyone help me by telling me how to have 5.10.20 start automatically. I checked the configuration, under activity, and it said Run Always, so, I do not know what to do. |

In service mode, BOINC will run even before you log in. In single user mode, BOINC will start when you start the manager, and close when you close the manager. There is a checkbox during the installation asking if you want BOINC Manager to start automatically or not. This will add BOINC Manager to the Startup folder on the start menu, making it load on boot. |

Thanks. First, sorry, I should have said 5.8.16. I installed as a single user because it said that was preferred. But, I do not want to have to start BOINC manually. I will look for the check box. >>RSM |

I installed as a single user because it said that was preferred. But, I do not want to have to start BOINC manually. I will look for the check box. I looked for a check box to start BOINC automatically. All I found is to launch BOINC at logon. Logon is too ambiguous. Does that mean when I boot my computer, or when I launch BOINC once my desktop is up. I tried the service installation. Nothing worked on 5.10.20 for BOINC to start on its own. I again went back to 5.8.16. Again, BOINC started automatically, if painfully slowly. I believe that the problem for 5.10.20 is Windows Defender. There is no way to remove BOINC from Windows Defender Blocked startup list. And, no one in their right mind is going to kill Windows Defender. It is incumbent upon BOINC to get 5.10.20 clarified by Windows Defender. Thanks for your help. >>RSM |

Logon is too ambiguous. Does that mean when I boot my computer, or when I launch BOINC once my desktop is up. Logon means when you are starting your desktop, as in having had to choose/type in your user name and password. Prior to that, Windows is only started up, not logged on. |

A friend told me that the major difference between 5.8.16 and 5.10.20 is that the latter will have two tasks running on a Core 2 Duo machine. So, that certainly is an impetus to run 5.10.20. I would like someone to confirm this. Since he is generally correct, I have loaded 5.10.20 via the Service method. I compared it in Task Manager with the 5.8.16 installation on the other Vista machine. On both machines, the only task I saw running is Seti. I have Seti, Rosetta, Predictor, Spinhenge, WCG running on the machine now on 5.10.20, so, frankly, I don't get it. Is he right? Should I see more than one task running? Thanks, >>RSM |

I have 5.8.15 on this dual-core and it's running two tasks side-by-side; I could also run two WUs with an earlier boinc version. On one of your projects you'll need to go into your account and edit your general preferences to say use 2 cores. It must just be set to 1 by default. In boinc manager you'll then need to highlight the same project and click the Update button to inform the server. That choice should then automatically be applied to all your projects. I haven't got Vista but I don't think this should make any difference. |
