Ageless, Nicolas, thanks for the info. Still wonder though if the trick (making a 'full copy' of BOINC on comp A with tasks waitng but not in progress, crunch these tasks to completion on comp B and copy it back to comp A to upload and report) will even be possible if v6 is intended as a service... Sure one can copy all the files, but how can one start any tasks if there is no service? Currently this is possible via command line, but will this still be the case in v6?

Sure (hope) there is! On both A and B. Possibly the same should work as without a service installation, and use "net start/stop boinc (or however will the service be named)" instead of Boinc Manager GUI or command line interface.

Maybe "net stop boinc" on A, copy everything from A to removable media ... to B, "net start boinc" on B, after few days of crunching, "net stop boinc" on B, copy everything from B to removable media ... to A, "net start boinc" on A and let everything be transfereed to/from project servers, and the whole cycle again...

A while ago I've asked Rom (on romworld) if it was possible to add a skins directory to the installed files.
That way users don't have to make it after downloading a skin... it would simplefy things for those wondering were to leave the downloaded files.
I've got 6.x installed at my laptop for upcoming translation use, but I didn't see that, after the installation, one was created.

Is it possible to add this to the milestones..??

Greetings,
Rene

Hi guys,

guess soemone already proposed this, but i couldn't succeed in finding any post about it in these "Wish list" threads, so I'll state my wish here..

It would be nice to be able to set a given WU to be kept running until completion form th "TASKS" pane, e.g one selects a TASK and can push a button and get this task to a "run continuously until completion" state, where this task will start running if not running and task switching will be suspended until the WU gets completed, pretty much like the automatically assigned "running, high priority" state that boinc can assign to a given task when it thinks there's a chance it won't complete within deadline.

On multiple CPU systems where more than one task is allowed to run task switching would be suspended foronly one of these "slots".

This would greatly help people taking part in experimental 8alpha or beta) projects along with "stable" ones when it is needed (or desired) to have a WU of one of this projects be completed ASAP (or let run as long as possible in a short time).

Basically only one task should get this state at a given time, hence eneabling it for a given task should reset any other task in "manned forced priority" state to switch back to normal scheduling.

Otherwise multiple tasks might be placed in this "manned priority" state and priorities among them could be assigned (and changed), i.e. the highest priority ine will be run until completion, then then second priority one, then the third ... In this case, on hosts where multiple computing "slots" are available, one should be able to set how many slots can be assigned to "manned priority" tasks.

I guess, anyway, that being able to assign this state to a single task would already be a good deal for all those who would make use of this feature.

Bye

Think to have seen this 'wish' before of jobs running uninterrupted to completion. To a certain extend this is already managed by projects and short deadlines. One can further impact this by extending the project switching times. If an alpha runs for 4 hours estimate and the switch is set to 6 hours, it would go in 1 run. The whole time management and debt system would take care if the alpha takes too much.... give it a low weight and it's sure to be put in the corner for a while so other projects can catch up.

Well, I know this can already be done by tweaking BOINC switching parameters, at least to some extent and in a pretty empirical manner, my "wish" would be to be able to do it fast, easy and for good.

Maybe I'm the only one, maybe I'm not, but I do enjoy taking part to most experimental projects with one of my BOINC hosts to help developing, also posting bugs and issues on those projects' boards, hence having a chance to get a WU crunched ASAP when a bugfix is to be tested or an issue is to be checked for repeatbility would be fine for me...

Bye

I was wondering if it would be possible to add a way to start a particular work unit instead of letting Bionc choose one at random. There have been times when I had a work unit that was almost finished, however Bionc would choose to start 2 different work units (I have a Dual Core System). It would be nice if I could say right click with the mouse Choose to tell Bionc to run the work unit I selected.

I have a similar wish, in that I would like an option to have BOINC execute the tasks in the order I sort them. Even better would be the ability to write a custom task selection DLL that would do the sorting for me. Personally Id prefer it work on the task with the lowest time from estimated completion to deadline, but I only run one project (Seti@Home) and I know some projects dont play nice with the scheduler (PrimeGrid).

So many things I'm not liking in BOINC, I'm getting tempted to write my own BOINC core client from scratch. First feature would be making the scheduler and workfetch algorithms separated in a plugin, so that people can write a new one. BOINC is open source, doesn't mean it's easy to change. The scheduler code seems a bit scattered around the client.

Now what to name it, NOINC? Or for your other nickname, POINC? ;-)
Or PLOINC? PovAddict's Love for Open Infrastructure Networks. :-)

like in windows, boinc runs when there isnt network connection, I would like to see boinc on linux do the same thing, currently, I cannot start boinc if I dont have an internet link on the computer, changing to network activities suspended isnt working.

I think BOINC doesn't have Linux code to detect when a network connection is available.
changing to network activities suspended isnt working.

Are you sure it doesn't work? Maybe you clicked Update or similar while you had network activities suspended. BOINC then enables network activity in an attempt to help users who disable network without knowing what they are doing and then get confused when buttons don't work; at the expense of confusing everybody else.

I did a search and didn't find this wish -
On a Windows XP platform, it would be nice on the Tasks Tab, to be able to sort the "Report Deadline" column by 24:00 time instead of just numerically (for example - currently 10:00am comes after 9:00pm for the same date)

It's been entered into Trac as Ticket #166.

youve miss understood me, I meant that using the suspend network options doesnt enable boinc to work without network.

Works for me. If you disable network activity, BOINC doesn't do any network activity on its own. Only if you explicitly tell it to, by for example updating a project.

I think you have misunderstood the issue: the problem is that it is simply not possible to start Boinc without some kind of net connection. For example, on my Gentoo machine I have to start either the cable or wireless card to be able to start Boinc. It doesn't matter if there is any internet behind the router, Boinc just needs some network.
It would be nice if this could get fixed in the future.

I've noticed this too. I have a laptop with a wireless card. If I don't have the card plugged in, BOINC does not run. After a short time after manually starting BOINC, I checked the task manager and can confirm it was not running. So if I want BOINC to run I insert the card, even though there is no wireless network within range. Seems a strange thing to have to do.

If I could have one wish, I would would load BOINC projects onto my Blackberry and run it while I have it plugged in.

If I could have two wishes I would do the same with my cell phone.

BlackBerry has 16MB of RAM. Probably just enough to run its internal software. I doubt you can do much there; BOINC core client alone uses 4MB on Windows, add the memory usage of a tiny project and you probably have no memory left to make phonecalls :) Other cellphones probably have even less RAM.

Also, it's usually close to impossible to get 3rd party software running on a cellphone (unless it runs Symbian or Qtopia, which have open frameworks for software development). Finally, running computationally-intensive software on a cellphone would give you really bad battery life.

My wish list ( as short as it may be ) is to have a centralized location of all Boinc projects on one page with clickable hyperlinks and maybe a brief description of each beside, so as to have the ability to pick and choose which one you want to run, also have ( maybe on same page) the Boinc projects that have the intent of joining up with Boinc.
