BUMP.

There are others, like me, out there who are having the same issue (Boinc Service not suspending when user active under Vista) and are lurking for resolution.

Work around of "Improved Windows Vista compatibility" by running all Boinc components as priviliged administrator makes me a bit nervous ... not for my PCs, but for other non-technical-folk's PCs who are remote from me and I've convinced to contribute CPU cycles when their PC is idle.

Public beta version appears to be 5.10.13 w/improved Vista compatibility.
But for remote machines, I really feel better staying away from Beta versions.

Please. Someone who is having this issue please post to the alpha list. I don't know what other questions to ask. The developers read that list. They'll be able to ask the questions and get any debugging information needed to figure this out.

I posted a message on the alpha list.
Suggested someone knowledgable there post in this thread.

It **appears** that this issue *may* be fixed in the just released version 5.10.13 for Windows (Version History). Or at least a temporary heavy-hammer solution implemented until a more graceful solution is done.

[I have done a clean install of 5.10.13 and the issue remains. I also tried having the service run with my credentials or as a system service and there was no change.

I just installed the seti Crunch3er optimized apps (http://calbe.dw70.de/2.4V/2.4V_Windows_x64_SSSE3_GFX.zip) and it made the issue go away. I'm running seti, cpdn and lhc.

Funny thing is as far as I can see I don't get the message telling me I'm using the optimized app. Perhaps the issue is not related to the app itself but some configuration relating to it is.

If you are only running the standard apps from cpdn and lhc (NO SETI) is the issue still there?

This previous post identifies "17/06/2007 14:05:13||Reading preferences override file" while the problem is still there. I notice in Tinface's listing that line is NOT there w/ location=home but no preferences set for home, so BOINC using DEFAULT preferences.

Tinface: Can you create local preferences override & see if issue reappears?

After copying the custom apps to the seti project folder, the Boinc service was disabled somehow. This was the reason suspend on activity worked. Restarting the Boinc service causes the issue to reappear. My bad, sorry.

So, this seems like it is a SETI issue and not a BOINC issue?
Other projects tried so far suspend as they are supposed to???

No, it was a case of me messing up. I had disabled the service when switching to a custom seti app and forgot to restart it afterwards. As long as the service is not running, the manager can suspend on activity. The service cannot.

5.10.27 seems to have fixed this problem. I double checked that the service is actually running this time :)

Can anyone else confirm this? I'm not going to post on the trac ticket again till I'm sure the bug is actually gone for good.

Edit: I ran 5.10.20 until upgrading to .27. The fix might have been in any inbetween version.

I believe it's been fixed.

There's now a small helper app called boinctray that monitors the system for user activity.

See this entry in the change log.

I Don't know a whole lot about what I am doing with BOINC, except that I am delighted that my four computers are doing something good, not just music and photos.

I am running projects on 2 core 2 duo very new machines, and two older PIII machines

Here is my question.

I have about seven projects on all of the machines. I am not worried about the two core 2 duo machines; but the 2 PIII machines: How do the tasks run? Does one task run until it is finished, or does it run for a time and share by switching off to another task? If this last would be the case, and because the machines do not run unless I am at home evenings and week ends(when I am home, they run flat out for 24 hrs), then I would worry about any given task not getting enough time to finish. This would be a total waste. I could cut down the number of projects easily if necessary,

BOINC is prepared for such things. It will download work from a few projects, and probably it will get "full" pretty fast. It will get into a situation where getting more work would mean not being able to complete existing work in time, so it just stops fetching work.

When work is processed, the other projects accumulate "debt". This means how much BOINC "owes" to them. When some work gets completed and returned, and it can fetch work again, it will first ask work from the projects it owes more (= higher debt).

In a long term period, it will have crunched the correct amount to all projects (correct meaning it will follow your resource shares).

In most cases, you can attach as many projects as you want to, and just let it sort itself.
