Hello Berkeley,

BOINC has reached a fine milestone today, the 1,000,000th user has arrived and decided to test BOINC.

Link to BOINCstats

Unfortunately only about a quart of all users are active users, but nevertheless a fine milestone to be made public!

Congratz to all developers!

Is there any way to discover who the millionth member is?

I think the proportion of active users may really be higher than a quarter. I registered twice on a boinc project with two different names, and only my current registration is actively crunching. Lots of other people have also done this.

I hope it's OK for me to put a link to your post in cpdn's News thread?

Of course it's OK.

BTW: All this users have at least a tiny bit of granted credit, otherwise they would not be in the stats. Willy said minimum is 0.00001 or such.

Yes and no. I can easily (and have) run a querry on the data at BOINC Combined Stats to get the 1,000,000 person to sign up. For you SQL nuts, it would be something like:

select cpid, min(create_time) from users group by cpid order by create_time

and then just go to the 1,000,000 in the list. BUT, the problem is not all current projects export stats, and a few (LHC @ Home) did at one time but currently don't. So, unless we can get a few more of the projects that have been around a while to export data, it would be kind of hard to get an accurate 1,000,000 user to start using BOINC.

Based on current data, The millionth person started using BOINC on May 1,2007 21:23:51 CDT, only participating in 1 project (Rosetta@Home).

The first person to use BOINC (big shock here) was David Anderson on Feb 13, 1999 17:28:13 CST.

Boinc has certainly come a long way in 8 years.

Dr Anderson said in a recent talk (pdf file from April 4 item here) that 1% of home computers were running distributed computing projects. I think maybe he meant 1% of American computers; I can't believe that it's 1% of the whole world's home computers.

8?
Seti may have been around that long, but BOINC certainly hasn't. Or it must've been as an idea in the mind of DA. ;-)

We have started a beta test of BOINC using the Astropulse application. Many bugs have been found and fixed.

BOINC is under development. The basic features are working on UNIX platforms. We plan to release the first public application of BOINC later this year.

As per Old BOINC News.

Congratulations, that is indeed a milestone.

I tried to post a longer response but it was blocked as spam. What gives?

It seems that if I try to put a link to the Pirates@Home glossary here it gets blocked as spam.

Same happens when we try to link to Einstein and CPDN...

Ah, then it's not just me then? :-)

So I will try to make my comment without a link to trigger the spam filtering.

1 million users is certainly a lot. I've lately wondered about the size of other projects and sites on the net, and so for the past few weeks I've been collecting data, which you can see (here's where I'd give a link) in the glossary on Pirates@Home under "Media Millions". For example, I've got the number of users on My Space, Facebook, and QQ (in China). The number of subscribers to XM and Sirus radio, the NY times, and BlackBerry. And so on.

Now I don't want this to discount in any way this great achievement for BOINC, so keep in mind that these are all "mass" media and should be expected to be larger than BOINC, and just the raw numbers don't tell the whole story.

The page is a wiki, so I welcome additions and corrections.

(Now let's see if the spam filter objects to any of the things mentioned above...)
