I installed the latest stable version of BOINC on my MEPIS 6.5 Linux box. It is unable to connect to a client. I keep telling it to try again to no avail. I went to select computer and typed in "localhost" like it suggested. I was wondering how to get BOINC connected so I can start adding projects?

What command are you using to start BOINC?

The runmgr file. I double-click it and it opens the manager.

The manager is just a GUI. You also have to execute run_client, before starting the manager. That's why it's unable to connect to a client: there is none running :)

Running the manager first, starts the client.........but it also closes the client when you close the manager.

Running the client first, allows you to start or stop the manager without closing the client.

Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows works this way for me.

I am Linux challenged but want to learn. Please tell me how to execute "run_client". I searched for a file by that name but could find one. If you could tell me what to type at the command prompt, that would be great.

try going into a terminal window and typing "boinc_client"
If its the standard Ubuntu install this should fire the core client up.
Other than that the standard install should run when you boot up. Open your process monitor (sorry i use Kubuntu so im not sure what it is on Gnome) and see if BOINC is listed there.

I installed BOINC differently. I downloaded BOINC from the URL and installed on the desktop. I did not use apt-get or synaptic.

Until 5.9.11, the 32-bit Ubuntu was always able to open BOINC Manager. After installing 5.9.11, I cannot open BOINC Manager.

I have never been able to open BOINC Manager on 64-bit Ubuntu.

Ok there is a problem with 5.9.11 because i had it. I got a segmentation violation when i tried to run it in a terminal and nothing happens from GUI. Simple solution download and older copy of BOINC, install it elsewhere and then copy and paste the file "boincmgr" into your current BOINC folder.

I upgraded to 5.10.0 (32-bit), no more problem running Boinc Manager.

No 64-bit version yet.

My problem is a little different. I have successfully installed BOINC manager and core client program on Kubuntu 'Fiesty' for AMD64. I can launch BOINC Manager and connect to my Setiathome project, but when I try to request work I get the message:

Scheduler Request Succeeded
Message from server:'x86_64-pc-linux-gnu' Not Found..

What in the world does that mean? Is it a compatibility issue with the Kubuntu 64-bit OS, or some missing dependencies maybe? Has anyone been successful running BOINC on a 64-bit Linux machine? I have it running successfully on this same box with XP64, but Linux is not one of my strong suites.

SETI, for reasons known only to themselves, don't support the X86_64-pc-linux-gnu platform - they have their own version. I can't remember the exact format but it's something like x86_64-unknown.

The only way that I've been able to get SETI to run 64bit linux is to use one of Simon's optimised apps with the app_info file.

I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 64bit
After installing from the Add/Remove app I could not connect to localhost
Reason: the installation only installed the manager.
Solution: System->Administration->Synaptic Package manager
searched for Boinc
installed boinc client
immediately the Boinc manager responded and asked for a project url

That's nice if your distro has an up-to-date BOINC client to download.

e.g. my Mepis 6.5 only points to 5.4.9, which is a little too old.
It'll work, of course, but still. Do watch out a little.
