I've just upgraded from 4.45 and now apparently I need a password to connect to local host.

What the heck is the default password and where do you change it? I can't run the manager at the moment.

The password can be found in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file in your BOINC directory.
You can change it, but remember to restart BOINC afterwards.

Someone more knowledgeable about 5.2x will be able to give futher info on this.

Help! What password?

I, too, just upgraded to 5.2.x and now I can't get into the BOINC Manager. When I launch it it says "The password you provided is incorrect, please try again." I didn't provide any password! And my computer can't open gui_rpc_auth.cfg.

What do I do?

This for 5.2.x CCs
When you activated your account, you got an account key, but did you create a password for your account. If you didn't, you can do it when you go to "Your account" with "Change password".
With that password, not the password of Classic, and your e-mail address it should work

This didn't help! I used your link to change my password, and even uninstalled and downloaded again, and I still get the same message without ever being asked to input password or email address.

This is 5.2.7 on Windows XP, single computer connecting by modem.

Any help anybody?

Any help anybody?

Using windows explorer, go to your BOINC installation folder, which is typically C:\\Program Files\\BOINC

In the list of files, find the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg and right-click on it. In the pop-up menu, choose Open With.... In the next window, choose Select the program from a list and click OK. A list of available programs will be displayed. Choose the program Notepad if it appears, and click OK.

Once the file is open in Notepad, you will see a random value of numbers and letters. Replace the random string with your own preferred password value.

Stop BOINC and make sure it is not running (Check for a process called "boinc.exe" in Task Manager).
Start BOINC Manager.

If you get the message "The password you have provided is incorrect, please try again" click OK to acknowledge that message.
Click on File->Select computer...
In the hostname field, type localhost
In the password field, type the password that you put in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file.

Please report back here if you still have problems.

Welcome to BOINC ;-)
