Hello, I've recently upgraded to Vista, but I noticed that my credits where going down despite having the computer on longer. I had a look at the results and their status and for all the projects there are lots of "Client error" outcomes. This makes me think that there is a a problem. Any ideas of how I can fix it? Or what the problem is.

Could you please tell which project or projects this is on?
Can you give a link to one (or more) of the faulty results?
Can you tell us which BOINC version?

Else it's going to be a general guess work.

I was using version 5.8.11, but I have just upgraded to 5.8.15. It seems to be happening on the following projects (i.e. all the projects I'm attached to)
Nano-Hive@Home
Predictor@Home
QMC@Home
Rosetta@Home
SETI@Home
Spinhenge@home

Some of the faulty results on Predictor are:
http://predictor.scripps.edu/result.php?resultid=828023
http://predictor.scripps.edu/result.php?resultid=808342
http://predictor.scripps.edu/result.php?resultid=802600
http://predictor.scripps.edu/result.php?resultid=736017

Also some from QMC are:

http://qah.uni-muenster.de/result.php?resultid=1411225
http://qah.uni-muenster.de/result.php?resultid=1409439
http://qah.uni-muenster.de/result.php?resultid=1406276

Details about my computer:
Windows Vista Ultimate
64-bit operating system
1535MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz

My stats are http://www.boincstats.com/stats/boinc_user_graph.php?pr=bo&id=5e1d3221354ef62454a4e019949a2631 and I installed vista on the 12th feb and as you can see my credits are hovering despite leaving my computer on for about 15 hours a day (an increase in about 10 hours).

Hi Ben,

I took a look around and found this old thread on Malaria which describes what the problem is.

The message exit code -1073741510 (0xc000013a) means that when you log off of Windows the application gets terminated quite abruptly. Apparently BOINC/the science applications don't like that too much. I understand Vista can shut down in 2 seconds... that's not enough time for BOINC to stop.

So please test this: Before you shut down your computer next time, exit BOINC.
If you run as a normal user install, it's done through Boinc Manager, File->Exit.
If you run as a service install, you need to stop the service first. Start->Run, type net stop boinc and hit enter. (um... I haven't a clue if there's a Start->Run option in Vista. ;))

I thought it might be something like that. I'll try it out for a few days and I'll report back whether it worked.

After days and days of testing I can conclude that your suggestion has worked. Thanks.

Since I do not want to start a new thread, and this one is new enough and the header applies to my issue, I figure I would ask here.

I received a new PC last night, with Vista. I did this because I "need" to learn Vista for some future things happening. The machine is running great, and I am pretty satisfied with things for the first few hours of playing.

The problem I am having is I installed as a service. I read all the issues about BOINC not working well in Program files, so I purposely made a seperate directory and installed under there. BOINC itself is running awesome, the 3 projects connected to the box are flying with the speeds I expect. There is only one SMALL issue that is bothering me.

The commands "net stop boinc" and "net start boinc" do NOT work. They error out like I do not have permission to do this. I can go to the control panel / services and stop and start it there. I have not read up enough on Vista to see if there is a work around. I installed in under the same account I am trying to stop and start it. I was hoping someone knew a simple solution for this.

Sorry I was so long winded.

HI PB,

I did a look-see around the net and from what I can see you need to add the user to the administrators group before that user is allowed to use the net command.
Or make it a shortcut/batch file and run that as administrator.

Ageless, I am administrator. That's why I can do it on the Service Control Panel.

Odd.

OK, so I am learning Vista. It does run most things as a "user" unless you specifically tell it to run as administrator. So the Command Prompt runs in user mode, alas this is why I was getting the error trying to stop BOINC. I could go in control panel and stop it under services, which is what confused me. Control panel runs as administrator if you are one. So there is inconsisitancy with the OS itself.

If you are looking to use Vista, take your time. I am learning it for a future job I will have to work on, so this is why I have it installed at home. So far not too much difference in the way to make it work, but some definate changes that are interesting.

Microsoft logic...

You're not an administrator, you're a Power User/Administrator. Want to be an administrator? Use the administrator account. We decide what rights an administrator has, not you. We are Microsoft, what we say is law.
