I have attempted to install 5.25 with no success. I uninstalled all of 4.45 and got rid of everything related to Boinc in the registry. Now, when attempting to download either version I get (for 4.45) The configuration data for this product is corrupt; for 5.25 1714 Older version can't be removed. I am unable, therefore, to do any crunching. I need some serious tech help on this if anyone has any answers. Short of reformatting (a fate slightly worse than death) I have no Idea how to proceed. Further to this, I have managed to download 4.19 and I tried to replace it with 4.45. I got the same corrupt config. data error message. I then uninstalled 4.19 and tried again...still no luck. Frankly I'm stumped. I hope someone from Berkeley reads this and has some suggestions. It appears that some piece of 4.45, invisible to me, is still in my computer. What it can be I've no idea. |

Jack, Sorry, I am not from Mars or Berkeley. Just stupid 'Ollanda. ;) Just install your BOINC to a seperate directory. It may want to go to C:\\Program Files\\BOINC... put it either on a different partition/drive or in a different directory name. Even C:\\Program Files\\Keith his BOINC is good enough already, but I think you can figure out something better. ;) |

Sorry Jord, nothing seems to work. I still get the error message: 1714 Older Version Cannot be Removed. Seems as though no one has any idea what the problem could be. I've tried everything anyone has suggested and short of reformatting (a fate worse than death) I don't know how to deal with this. My only option as I see it is to install a 2nd windows OS in a separate Partition and try that. But I don't know how that will effect my computer's performance. I just wish I knew how to get rid of whatever 5.2.2 is seeing. Thanks anyway. Jack |

It's a problem with Installshield. If you go through Add/Remove Programs and uninstall BOINC through there, does it still come up with this error? If it does, then run a registry cleaner before you attempt the new install. |

Believe me Ageless, I have eliminated every vestige of Boinc from my PC I even bought a registry fixer and ran it. There is no sign of Boinc. And when I try to download 4.45 I get the corrupt configuration data error message from Windows installer. And when I try to install 5.62 I get the 1714 error message. So I am totally stumped. I was able to download 4.19 and cruch WU's, but in trying to clean boinc out of the PC I removed it and now I find that on the SETI site 4.19 isn't available. |

Jacklass, I have a copy. Do you want me to mail it to you? I also put up a copy at http://boinc-doc.net/boinc_4.19_windows_intelx86.exe |

when I try to download 4.45 I get the corrupt configuration data error message from Windows installer. That's because the fault is with the Installshield installer. Not with Boinc. So you deleted the wrong entries from the registry. ;) Now, I've seen some people fix it by deleting the correct key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Installer\\Products in the registry, then rebooting. Do NOT delete all keys there. Do NOT make changes before you made a backup of the registry. Others manage to get rid of it by using the original file to start Setup with, then choose the uninstall option they get. So if your original file was Boinc 4.45, to start up the 4.45 installer and apparently get an option to uninstall/repair the same version as it has already been found on the system. Choosing uninstall works. |

Well old boy, I tried to find installer\\products in my HKEY_CLASSES and it isn't there. Frankly, I'm stumped, I had 4.19 running, but I uninstalled it to try downloading one or the other of these versions, and now I can't find 4.19!! I thought I might partition my HD and load another installation of XP and try downloading there. Trouble is, I'm not quite sure how to go about it and I really don't want two OS's on my box. If I could move all my programs over to the second version and then delete the first I'd go ahead, but I don't know if I can do that and even if I can how to do it. What it boils down to is that if the only way I can get back to Boinc-ing is to reformat and reload everything I'll have to give it some serious thought. Everything else seems to be working and a reformat/reload is a royal pain in the ass. Anyway, thanks much for your suggestions. If you have any others you can email me at: jlass@starpower.net. See you on the Ear board. Jack |

It's at least caused by this: http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=Q107750. I have seen two instances of MSIEXEC.exe in my Task Manager after installing 5.2.6, so I think it's called on twice. I'll let Rom know about this. In the mean time, check which Installshield version(s) you have in C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\InstallShield |

Took a while and with the help of Joseph Mornhineway to get to the Installer cleaner of Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 Try to use that cleaner. |

Jord: That really worked well for me, to clear the "Error 1714". I, too, got the error following a corrupted removal and reinstall attempt of Boinc, under Windows XP (version SP2). The Microsoft Installer Cleaner did the trick. When I ran it, it listed all the programs the "Microsoft Installer" had installed on my computer. Boinc was not listed anywhere! But, at the top of the list from "MI Cleaner" was a blank item (actually, it was named with just a small rectangle character/symbol). All the other items had names like "Microsoft Office 2003". I gambled, selected the nearly blank item (with the name = that rectangle symbol) and had the MI Cleaner remove it. It must have been the corrupted semi-removed Boinc installation -- once it was cleaned/removed, I had no problems installing the latest version of Boinc for Windows (5.2.13). Thanks a lot. Barry |
