I can't find ANY documentation explaining how to choose the correct computing prefs for my systems. Can someone point me in the right direction ? Please bear with me and assume I'm a newbie .

Depends on what your systems are and what you want to run and how you want to run things.
See https://boinc.mundayweb.com/wiki/index.php?title=Local_preferences for what each of the preferences do and how they are set.

With CPDN and some of the theoretical physics projects I have found I need to increase the amount of disk space available to BOINC to allow tasks to download. That is always the first thing I change from the defaults on a new installation, especially if the installation is within a virtual machine.
