...with the screensaver as an optional goodie to avoid the necessity of an administrator account when installing. That's what i really would appreciate. Am i right that an administrator account is only needed because the screensaver should be copied to the system-directory? Oh, yes, i'm talking about the windows-version... what do you out there think about this (especially the people responsible for creatig a new version)? Was this issue discussed elsewhere? Are there any reasons for an administrator account? |

You'll also need admin rights to install BOINC as a service. If you just want the files from the downloaded package, you run the boinc installer with a "/a" switch (eg "boinc_5.8.8_windows_intelx86.exe /a"), enter a path when prompted of where you'd like the files extracted, and don't select the option to "Launch BOINC" when prompted. You could then use the extracted files to do a manual installation. |

No, the switch /a unpacks the installer file. So you don't need to install it separately. You then have a directory with the main BOINC files in a separate Program Files\\BOINC\\ directory and one directory called Windows that only holds the BOINC.scr file. You can move that file to your own Windows directory. You can only use the /a switch from a command line window though. So if you need help on that... ask and I'll write it up. |

No, the switch /a unpacks the installer file. That's what I said it did. So you don't need to install it separately. It won't run in that state without further effort on your part, hence my reference to a manual installation, be that copying the files somewhere and creating a shortcut to boincmgr, or manually installing it as a service. |

So you don't need to install it separately. Ever tried it? I use that install option as the clean install option to do a separate install from my normal BOINC. Just go to the \\Program Files\\BOINC\\ directory and start boincmgr.exe Works great. Even on separate accounts, where BOINC has never been installed before. |

@Marky-UK, @Ageless: Thank you both for replying! I have given the /a-switch a try and it worked: it created 2 folders, [program files] and [Windows] and the installer file BOINC.msi i then stopped version 5.4.11 which was running, copied the content of [program files]\\[BOINC] into the folder of the 5.4.11 version (with the 'overwrite existing files'-option) and startet the BOINC-Manager. After the benchmarks all projects where continueing (?-how do i write this; sorry for my poor english) where i stopped them before installing version 5.8.8! Everything worked fine, thanks to you both and your help - Thank you again!!! kind regards, Reinhart / ikarus1969 |
