BOINC Manager no longer connects to the client

This began happening a few days ago, and I haven't been able to figure out why. BOINC Manager never gets past "Connecting to localhost", and I eventually get an error dialog which says "The BOINC client has exited unexpectedly 3 times within the last 2 minutes. Would you like to restart it again?"

My system

    BOINC Manager Version: 8.0.0 (x64)
    wxWidgets Version: 3.2.4
    CPU: Intel® Core™ i9-10900K CPU @ 3.70 GHz (10 cores, 20M cache)
    GPU: nVidia GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6, 5888 CUDA cores
    NVIDIA DCH driver version: 551.68
    DirectX runtime version: 12.0
    OS: Windows 11 Pro (23H2 Build 22631.3527), 64-bit



I do not have BOINC installed as a service.

I don't see anything relevant in the Windows event logs, but the BOINC Manager output I get looks like this:

I see that unhandled access exception in there, and a bunch of errors relating to WSL (not sure why BOINC Manager cares about that).

Any ideas what may have gone wrong, and what I might be able to do to repair it?

You're running a beta version of BOINC & BOINC Manager. Trouble like this may be happening, even after it started off as stable, it may destabilize.

What you can try is to uninstall this version, go back to an earlier version (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php has 7.24.1) to see if that one has the same problems. Because if that does, it's something on your system causing this. If 7.24.1 is stable (for now), it may be that there's something wrong in BOINC 8.0

In that case, report it at https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues

Well, how about that?

As suggested, I uninstalled v.8.0.0 of BOINC Manager and reinstalled v.7.24.1. That was able to connect to the client and now appears to be working normally.

I'll try submitting a bug report for the beta version, which worked fine for several months - until it didn't.

I am running tiny10 (cut down version of win10) in a VM. No such problems here with 8.0.0 Be interesting to know if the problem only occurs with 11 or if it's something else.
