Why am I getting this message when the only thing this computer is doing is working on BOINC projects? If the computer is never used for anything else, just untick the options to suspend when computer usage is above N%. You don't say whether this is happening a lot, or occasionally, is it possible that some housekeeping tasks such as downloading and installing updates is going on? I would also check in task manager whether anything is using the CPU. If nothing is using it then I really am at a loss for ideas. |

First, the computer is used for nothing else. Second, yes it is happening a lot. Third, there is no "housekeeping". Installing of updates is only done when required and at those times the computer is shut down and re-started. Task manager shows CPU @ 0%-2%. Memory @29% Disk 0% Network 0%. So are you saying I should go into each project separately and "untick the options to suspend when computer usage is above N%"? I am supposedly "subscribed" to this thread, but I got no email telling me of your response. I came looking for it because I got tired of waiting and I am glad I found your response. I hope I get an email when you answer about making the change on each project. Thanks for your help. http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |

No, not suggesting you do it via the project websites but in manager,Options>Computing preferences>computing untick suspend when computer is in use. Someone else will have to answer the problem with not getting a notification. Don't have a clue on that. |

Someone else will have to answer the problem with not getting a notification. Don't have a clue on that. @Richard Mitnick Please check your settings on this page: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/edit_forum_preferences_form.php Notifications -> Immediately, by email If you changed anything click "Update" close to the bottom of the page. Also on this page: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/edit_email_form.php Did you enter the correct email address? If you still don't get any email, try "Notifications -> On my Account page (no email)" on the forum preferences page. |

Preferences when set via a project's website, are global. This means that you set them at one project and they will propagate to all other projects, if and when BOINC contacts them. As for not receiving emails, if the help given by computezrmle doesn't fix things, check your email's Spam folder. My notifications from boinc.berkeley.edu arrive in there as well. |

I have now had to go through each project twice. I followed your suggestion which resulted in "No projects running while computer is not in use." So I went through each project again and put in some usage. What would happen if I simply went to "Restore defaults"? http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |

I have now had to go through each project twice. If you only have ONE computer it's easier to change settings in the GUI BOINC MANGER settings as Dave noted several post prior - Message 113247. If more than one PC and want all PC's to get same preferences... You only need to change & save GLOBAL settings at ONE OF YOUR ACTIVE PROJECTS, otherwise everything can get messed up over which project preferences to use. Once you have updated the settings at a project go into each PC and FIRST update the project you made changes at and then after that you should update all remaining projects in BOINC MANAGER. How to update in BOINC MANAGER GUI: Click projects tab near top; Highlight first project you made changes at. Click UPDATE button in left column. Let it finish update; Highlight remaining projects in list by holding shift button as you click/highlight each one; Click UPDATE button in left column. Let it finish all projects update. * All projects now should have picked up the correct info from the first project. |

Thanks for all of the help, but since nothing I did worked I quit and uninstalled BOINC. This is not my first rodeo. I was a cruncher some years ago and managed to accumulate 36,000,000 credits, putting me in 99.7 percentile of all BOINC of all time at least at that time. In those days one never actually interceded in any one project. All administrative tasks, parameters and constraints were done via BOINC, like percentage of CPU usage, etc., which appears could have been possible here had it been made clear to me. I read somewhere that Dave Anderson's team had all left for other jobs and that the projects were on their own, so I assumed I had to constrain each project separately. It was not clear to me that I should have made any adjustment at the BOINC manager. It was never made clear to me that changes at one project would propagate to the other projects. I wasted a lot of time with this and I am not coming back. I still wish to do computer based citizen science and will find somewhere else to go. Any suggestions? http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |

Folding@home does useful work though personally I would not use it on a computer I wanted to use much for other work. A shame you are giving up as while I have never had the problem you describe possibly due to never having set parameters via project websites other than opting in or out of particular task types, resolving this for you might also have helped others struggling with the same issue. |

Sad to see you go Richard. Yes BOINC is a bit more complicated now that we have GPU and multi- core/thread machines with various options/settings. Sometimes it's best to ask for help before trying to figure something out when confused or things don't seem to work the way we want them to.... As my college introduction to computing teacher wrote on the board in our first class: RTP^3 == "Read The Problem, Read The Problem, Read The Problem." *To really foul things up requires a computer. |

I already installed folding@home tonight. I did a computer search for other sites and did not see any I liked. Right now when I check my install folding does not recognize my name. I am hoping that is because I have no credits and when I have credits folding will recognize my name. I would come back to BOINC if I could get very explicit line by line and point by point directions to have it work properly. I assume if I re-installed BOINC now it would come back with all of the problems i had when I left. I would want the same projects to which I had previously attached. One of you guys can let me know. http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |

When you say "BOINC MANAGER GUI" are you referring to BOINC "Advanced view" or something else? If it is something else, then I have no idea what you mean. But, of course you can very explicitly tell me. If you want to attract new users, then don't assume people know about what you are writing. It would be helpful if the terminology was kept consistently. If I do manage with help to get BOINC working properly I plan to promote it on my blog, which has 600 direct recipients and 1200 on the Facebook Fan page, both world wide. That is a lot of potential, but probably mostly people with little computer knowledge. I have already replied that I would come back if I could get explicit point by point and line by line direction and asked that the terminology be kept consistent, like "BOINC Manager GUI" vs BOINC Manager "Advanced view". I know what "Advanced view" means because that is what I see. I saw no use of "GUI", "graphic user interface" but it is to "GUI" I was directed which is useless. The terminology must be kept consistent. I assume that if I re-installed BOINC I would get back all of the projects to which I was attached with all the problems which I had when I left. They would need to be resolved. I await any reply, positive or negative. http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |
