I just installed BOINC and attached to four projects. I received a notice that BOINC is not running. I need to get this fixed or quit BOINC.

Which OS and BOINC version are you using.
Is the Manager running but unable to connect to running client? If so,
Can you start the client by clicking on the exe file or if using Linux

sudo systemctl start boinc-client

When you have answered those questions myself or someone else will probably have some more specific questions about what you can check for.

I am running Win 11 23H2 on a Levono desktop computer.
I installed BOINC 7.24.1_windows_x86_64_vbox

I was a "cruncher" a few years ago, amassing 36,000,000 credits. I had to quit because of OCD and I burned out a US$5000 Maingear liquid cooled machine running GPU.Grid on two GPU's. Three times. Maingear is a boutique gaming computer company near where I live. They said this machine could do anything, not be beaten. I beat it to death. I will admit I was a credit hound, hitting at that time 99.7 percentile of all BOINC of all time.

Now it is safe for me to come back. I am not even trying to get back into my old BOINCStats I.D. I just want to contribute.

If I picked the wrong install for my machine (16 GB Physical memory; Intel i7-11700 8 core processor; gpu Intel on board - supports nVidia RTX A2000) just tell me what to use and I will uninstall and re-download and re-install.

No reason that I can think of that that version shouldn't work. When you say won't run, do you mean the manager won't start or just the client?

All I can tell you is the message I see on my monitor is "No tasks running".

Any help will be appreciated.

Which projects? If the projects are showing as attached, the client is running. Look in the event log to see what messages are there.

All I can tell you is the message I see on my monitor is "No tasks running".

You're giving contradicting information.
A notice in BOINC Manager that BOINC isn't running indicates that the BOINC Manager is running, but the BOINC client isn't.
A notice in Windows that BOINC isn't running, indicates that neither the client nor the manager are running.
A message (where? In BOINC Manager?) that no tasks are running, indicates that you're out of work. Maybe the 4 projects you added don't have work, or don't have work for the hardware you chose.

You say you ran BOINC for years, so you should know the difference between the BOINC client and the Manager, and you should know how to tell us in detail what you see, where you see this and more, so we can help you correctly.

In spite of my past history, I cannot find my way to BOINC Manager and BOINC Client.
Please tell me how to find each so that I can comply with your wishes.

In Windows, the easiest way to start BOINC Manager is via the Start menu. Start->search for BOINC in the list of programs->BOINC Manager.
Once that has started, maybe turn on Advanced view. In BOINC Manager go to View menu -> Advanced view.
CTRL+SHIFT+E opens the event log. Can you please copy & post the first 30 or so messages from here?

Those who help others on these boards are all volunteers. helping in their own time and to date the only information you have given does not help in tracking down your problem. Any one user's input in terms of computing power is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. You need to do some of the work yourself. Given what you say about your credit in the past, you should not need hand holding every step of the way.

I do not find a way to get beyond this one project. But I am also [I hope} attached to Rosetta@home; GPUGRID.net; Climate Prediction; Einstein@home;LHC@home;Milkyway@home.

One thing I found was that I had not updated Computer Preferences and Community Preferences, so I went through each project and updated both, especially the clock settings. This did not help.

I will try to give you anything I can bring up on the computer. I really want this to work.

Go to options>computing preferences>disk It might be worth either un-checking jleave at least NGB free and use no more than N% of disk space or changing the values to allow more of your hard disk space to be used by BOINC. That message indicates that at the moment lack of disk space is stopping Asteroids from downloading any work even if there is some available. Climateprediction.net currently has no work available. There will no doubt be a flurry of messages on their own fora when another batch is released. Despite being involved in their testing programme, I am not aware of an imminent release of new work.

Couple of things.
Your system only has Asteroids@Home added, none of the rest.

Not just have you set your maximum disk usage to zero - zero here being zero, not zero here being unlimited - but why also download and upload rates of just 51.2 Kbytes/sec? Are you on dialup?

Anyhoo, BOINC does exactly what you ask it to: you don't want to store work, as you've set your disk usage preferences to zero.
So it asks for work, but won't get any, because it can't store it.

My advice?
Set your BOINC preferences to default settings at the Asteroids project. Because now you've got bad preferences. Best start again.
It's okay to test things, but keep in mind what you add/change and if that doesn't work, change it again. I certainly would put a value - say 100 GB - into the max disk usage value, and preferably set the upload and download rates to something a little higher than what you have, especially if the tasks are big.

Go to options>computing preferences>disk

Yeah, but he's using the preferences from the project, so best advise him to change things there. This so that the user always knows where to go back to. And else explain that you are pointing them to the local preferences and that these overrule all the same preferences set via the project website.

I have re-installed BOINC and set all projects' Computing Preferences to default settings. I hope this works.
Any further advice or errors, please let me know.
