If I change from my broad (bored) band connection to use 4G via phone tethering, the phone connection is available immediately for web browsing, email etc. yet BOINC file transfers go into hibernation for fifteen minutes or more. Project updates seem to happen normally, just the file transfers. Currently this happening on WCG but I have seen the same on CPDN in the past.

Edit2:Downloads have now resumed normally (for WCG in its current state.) And seem faster now on my 4G but with the variability in WCG that may not be significant.

If the connection on boredband or other way around had open file transfers, then yes, it would time out and have to start over on new connections. Just like a phone call dropped connection. Hang up, try again.

Do they have to make the time out before trying again as long as 20 minutes though? I can recognise a dropped line and redial a number in seconds.

A few minutes max timeout on retry maybe, BOINC always been notorious long time outs on failed transfers & connections.

I think the developers working on the BOINC code recently were working on reducing the waste of time but I can't recall what exactly happened at the moment.

I would have to comb through the BOINC source code when I get back to my desktop PC. Jord or Richard Haselgrove might recall before then.

I don't think it's BOINC code per se doing that, more like Curl or OpenSSL, or both.

I'm experiencing mobile networking for 16 years now (and counting). And talking from experience -- yes, mobile networking is weird. Let me assure you, without insider at your provider there's no way you can diagnose your problems. In summary: live with it or leave it (if you can). Not a great choice.
