Just noticed

New BOINC Client released 17.20.0 Windows 64-bit

Release notes at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes

Download from standard BOINC download page.

Note VM version is still 6.0.14 regardless of what download page says. And release date was not updated.

You're not completely wrong. Release notes are published, so i don't understand....

I just downloaded the (Windows 64bit) 7.16.20 version without Virtualbox from Boinc manager. It's an exe file. When running it complains about not being able to find the .msi file and I have to abort the installation.

What's the fix?

I needed to use the Microsoft fix tool referenced there.
After that Boinc 7.16.20 installed and my settings were kept. Pffff....
