Recently, the Windows BOINC client stopped being able to communicate with some projects and with Science United. This is because of an expired entry in a file called the "certificate authority bundle".

To fix this problem, download a new version of the file and put it in the

C:/Program Files/BOINC

directory.

This is a temporary fix. We hope to release a new version of the client that won't have this problem in the future.

Directly trying to download this file into C:\Program Files\BOINC\ will not work, because you need elevated administrator rights to write files to the protected C:\Program Files\ directory. It may seem that the file gets downloaded and saved there, but the download manager in the browser will probably have flagged the file as Failed to have downloaded.

To counter this, save the file elsewhere, for instance to C:\TMP\ (if it's not there, you can make it with File Explorer).
When the file has saved there, copy it, then paste it into C:\Program Files\BOINC\ and when you get the window saying "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder", click Continue or provide the main administrator's password. Only then will this file save to the folder.

Do you have an exact idea or example how it could be made simple and without all these problems?

For many years, I maintained the installer which stopped BOINC (if running), installed optimised applications for SETI@Home in the correct place, stitched together an app_info.xml file to service the optional choices made, and restarted BOINC if needed.

Replacing a single file - not needing a stop-start cycle - would be a doddle by comparison. But I'm not going to make one because

1) This problem will be fixed before I could complete and test it.
2) It wouldn't work when the support files are locked up inside the main file.
3) We're going to move to an updated version of the support software.
4) I tested a new version that doesn't even need support software or a certificate bundle this morning.

5) I'm too old

Vitali you could have done a step by step process on how to get the temporary workaround to work as not all people that running BOINC are very good at computers.I downloaded the temporary workaround but still cant to seem to get it to work.Next time when you have a problem like this you can get the word out faster to the people that BOINC has a problem and that their is a temporary workaround and in the future announce that you have a permanent solution

hello experts,
I tried to upload results to Universe@home without success.
I tried to use this download adress;: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/ca-bundle.
but I get the following message
"Dieses Zertifikat ist bereits als Zertifizierungsstelle installiert."
I found an entry in the Universe@home forum and dowloaded the file ca-bundle.crt from https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XC3XHmjaZRYvJ2P3OzFaW62i4ShYThz8/view
and installed it. Then I terminated BOINC and started it again.
The upload problem continues:

Look for other copies of the ca-bundle.crt file in the host other than the only needed one in the BOINC folder. Those are the ones that keep BOINC from connecting. Either remove or replace/edit them.

Just to note I had a version of BOINC installed from Jan of 2020 and worked fine until I updated at the end of September so the ca-bundle.crt that was installed at the end of last month caused my issue. They need to update the Client Software as well. I downloaded my version on the 27th of September.

I think the bundle in the old version would have expired at the end of September too. I think it's just coincidence that you updated at the same time (near enough) as the certificate problem first struck.

I have the same issue with my Android-Smartphones (I'm calculating on universe@home with 6 phones) is there already a solution or update for it?

Which BOINC are you running? I run only Universe@Home on my 4 Android devices and they're still getting normal contact with the project. Using BOINC https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.18.1.apk (and yes, this new version is only available from the BOINC website)

Thanks for this tip. I had been refused work until I removed and tried to re-attch GPU Grid and a couple of new projects as tests.
Then I found I couldn't- and wondered if my kit had gone out of approval on GPU work, until I found this thread.
I see the new version of Boinc has the new crt file, so this shouldn't carry on needlessly - if people update.
Cheers.

I used the version that I downloaded from the Play Store, it was 7.4.53. But now I installed 7.18.1 (interesting, why is it only available here on the website?) and it works! Thank you!

On the Universe forum there is a tread where users are asking Linux specific questions regarding how to update their flavor of Linux. I am not qualified to respond to them. Does anyone here wish the volunteer to be a White Knight ?

In general, Linux versions of BOINC use the operating system's own versions of the SSL certificates. So, if they fail, the solution is to update Linux, rather than BOINC.

But there are so many different flavours of Linux, and so many different implementations of BOINC, that it's hard to give general advice.

Your prediction ....

We've already been warned that the 'GlobalSign Root CA - R2' certificate is due to expire in just over 2 months time, on 15 December this year, and that's number 2 in the new bundle

No, it's T.Brada's certificate that expired, on 19 December.
