I used to run the old command-line versions of SETI on multiple platforms. Are there any ways to streamline BOINC so that it doesn't waste any system resources on graphics and such? I'd prefer to put all the energy into the workunit itself.

Currently, I have it set to run at all times but it is NOT set as the screensaver in XP (to avoid the graphics). Is this the best I can do?

On cpdn, which has constantly changing graphics/screensaver, we just advise members to set the Windows screensaver option to None. You can still see the graphics if and when you want using the button in the boinc manager. It's worth checking in Task Manager that the workunit really is getting the resource share you want.

Additionally, you can install BOINC as a service. This way it'll start at boot and will stop (generally) only at shutdown.

You can still check the status of your BOINC using BOINCmanager or some other GUI RPS enabled software, such as BOINCView. If you don't want to use graphical tools to check the status and manage your BOINC, you can use command-line tool called boinccmd.

Do you have a password? BOINC requires a password for sevice installs prior to 5.8.1 and gives a seemingly unrelated message when it is not provided.
