Not a show stopper, but since the last upgrade, (7.16.11 x64), I have been seeing a problem where BOINC Manager a) loses contact with BOINC running on my other computer and b) loses contact with BOINC on its own computer.
a) the connection drops fairly quickly, ie. within hours
b) happens every couple of days
Has the mechanism changed? Both machines run 24/7.

A little more information. When I see this problem, a message "Connecting to local host" appears lower right.

Both systems are running under Windows 8.1 x64. That message implies the manager cannot "talk" to the base system on the same machine, which seems a little odd.

Off topic trivia, our post counts are, at this point, exactly 500 different...

Are the installers for earlier versions around somewhere, I just had a quick look but couldn't see them.

Never mind, I found some older installers on another machine here.

All tasks already downloaded have completed, so I used Windows ordinary program manager to delete BOINC from both systems, and ran the 7.16.7 installer on both machines. They are both crunching again. I'll see if that gets me forward.

Something I saw which suprised me a little, the newly installed 7.16.7 systems started with the correct projects already there. I had spent time before deletion making notes as to which projects were associated with which machine. Now, in this event, that was handy, but it indicates that "totally removing" software, using the Windows software that claims to do this, asks you if you are sure, then later asks you if you are REALLY sure, does not remove "totally". There must be some file, or registry entries left remaining.

I'll report my findings.

I think it is deliberate to ensure a new version of BOINC can carry on without data loss. Anyway, if you want to get rid of everything you have to manually delete the data folders rather than muck about with the registry.

I browsed the registry later to see if there are enties from Boinc but could not see anything obvious. That said, the registry can be a real mess to navigate around, it was not important enough to pursue.

A day later, and no problem, both windows are there and running as before. Conclusion: The fault I reported has been introduced.

Another, off topic observation: I saw an odd yellow mark at the top of the message that I had just written, and was displayed in front of me. Hovering, it says I have not read this message... always good to know...

A full week, still both windows present on screen and both functioning quite normally.
