Message 104346 - Posted: 10 May 2021, 17:43:28 UTC - in response to Message 104344.

The Asteroids server (s) are "temporary"out of work, lot's of tasks out on user PC's at the moment.

Have to wait for the project admin to load more work, however long that might be...

Guess the project is still on temporary storage / server use.

After a spell of good communications and a flurry of tasks. Asteroids is once again having problems (unless the problem is on my end, which is possible.).

Can't connect to my account, can't get on their home page nor their message boards. I get the following string of error messages:
______________

Anybody else having this difficulty getting through to ASteroids?

Yes.. everybody else who is trying to upload or download work and anyone trying to access anything that requires database access.

It appears either the Asteroids database has crashed or has been taken off-line. Take your pick.

apparently they have time to check their server about once a week . . . and so they did:

The project is temporarily down.

I am very sorry to inform you that the project is temporarily down. The database system was still running on a temporary hardware solution which failed a few days ago and the hardware is dead. We still don't have the planned new server and due to holidays and other circumstances we can't hurry anything up. New server should be available on Septemember or October so project will propably be down until then. We don't have any sufficient hardware for other temporary solution and I also think that the best solution is to get the project online when it is finally on a new stable hardware because I know that the project outages every few weeks are very frustrating.

I will post here later any new information when available.

well then lets see how the Harvest moon shines on this project . . .

their server crashed at the end of July.
they were thinking of a recovery with a new one, around the end of October, the beginning of November

One can only hope. But I am skeptical.

I decided to step out on a limb and email the university and Radim Vanco in an attempt to see if he will post an update.

Thanks

The requested URL was not found on this server.

And the plain http: address does the same as the https:

There's been no research references to Radim Vanco since last year.
I'm guessing that the Uni is saying that the Asteroids research project has been closed.

I will ask David to remove it from the projects lists.

And it's unlisted.
At least at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php, the projects list in BOINC can take a little longer to adjust.

Well I looked here

https://asteroidsathome.net/project.html

And saw this dated 02/12/21

Project Asteroids@home
Server status - offline
Update - 02-12-2021

Project servers are currently offline for longer period than expected. The main reason is that waiting for a new server took longer than expected. We finally have a new server but it will still take some time to start the project again. The new server will be at a different location than old servers are, all the project data have to be transferred there and BOINC server must be upgraded to the latest version before running up again. The project was running on three servers which two of them crashed. BOINC project data was using those two bad servers, non-BOINC project data was on the third server. New server will be running BOINC project data from both bad servers.

I am sorry I didn't post any news earlier. If needed I will post additional information here. I suppose that the project will be ready to continue by the end of month. This website is now running temporary on a Raspberry Pi and will switch to a new server when ready.

Great! If you want something to start working again, just say it's a heap of junk near it, and you're going to throw it out. :)

As for not posting something earlier, honestly!

Thus not dead, but on life support.
Hopefully the rebuilding of the project will not take too much longer and data will start to flow again (before Christmas would be a great present, but I think that's a bit early)
