Message 101260 - Posted: 24 Oct 2020, 4:25:07 UTC

I recently installed BOINC in a new PC, and I have installed 11 projects. Only one project is running in Tasks, (Einstein@Home). It is shown 17 times, and at the present, 6 lines of it are running, 5 lines are Ready to start, and 6 lines are Waiting to run. On my old PC, 6 projects are installed, and in Tasks, 4 are running or wating to run, and none are repeated.

Could anyone suggest what I may be doing wrong on my newer PC so the projects run normally?

Thank you

What you are seeing in Tasks is normal where a single project has supplied you with work on a six core processor. What we have to determine is why the other ten projects have not supplied work units for you to process.

In order to do that could you start by listing those projects so that we can at least make sure that they have work available.

1- Make sure that the projects have WUs available. Go to https://www.boincstats.com/ and click on 'status scheduler'. If your projects are orange or red, it means they may not have any work available for you.
2- Make sure your hardware is supported by the projects. Some projects only support CPU, others only GPU, some support both, others support only AMD, or only Nvidia GPUs, or only support ARM CPUs.
3- If your hardware supports the project, enter your account on the project page, and make sure the hardware is selected. If your project uses Nvidia GPUs, but it's deselected, you'll never get a WU from them.
4- If your hardware is new, it could take a while for the status schedulers to address your unique PC ID (or other mumbo jumbo). Comes down to some project servers are a bit slow in distributing the first WUs.
5- Make sure you have enough time work stored on your PC. If it's set to 1 day + 1 day of extra work, it's sufficient most of the time. Setting it too low, and other projects may not send you WUs, because you already have exceeded the amount of WUs set in this configuration setting.
6- Check the notices in the log or notice window. If the notices say anything about 'not getting CPU projects', or 'not enough ram' or 'incorrect address' or so, you can also learn a lot from that.
7- If all addresses are ok, select all projects in the project tab, and click update. Manually updating them may force some projects to give WUs.

A couple of things to consider:
Not every project has work available all the time & it's not uncommon for the first project to send work to dominate a new PC for a days (or even a couple of weeks).

Without knowing what your full list of projects is answering your question is difficult, also not knowing what the hardware your new PC has may make it easier to suggest how to tune it to get the balance of tasks running you are looking for.

OK, this is very frustrating. So, I went to https://www.boincstats.com/, tried to log in with my BOINC credentials so I could click on 'status scheduler', but my e-mail address is NOT recognized, the same address I used to log in to BOINC so I could post the questions you are helping me with. But, since I cannot log in, I can't even do step 1 of your suggestions. Is that a separate website that requires a different account to log into?

I am also receiving periodic e-mails: Dear vev46:
Greetings from Science United. We haven't heard from your computer yet. Please make sure that BOINC is installed and running.
Thanks for participating in Science United.

WHAT?? I am very much running BOINC. I am at a loss.

Thanks

The BoincStats website has no affiliation with BOINC. You need to register at Boincstats with your own private username and password.
You don't have to login to the website either to use it.
Just go to this URL:
https://www.boincstats.com/stats/-1/user/detail/34028/overview#

It sounds like you might have joined a project via the Science United project manager.

I would recommend not using that manager. Either use the BoincStats BAM manager or just use the Boinc Manager to join projects for the most control.

Yes, like mentioned above,
While it does require you to register if you want to see your own stats, you don't need an account to see the status schedulers.

If you do register, log in, click BAM, and My Detailed Stats, you'll see your own stats; they're updated once to trice a day.
So it's always nice to see how much progress you've made.
Takes a good few days of going through all the links, before you kind of have an idea what all the other available info is all about.
I just use it to keep my score (PPD) and position.

With regards to Science United, have you signed up to the projects via the Science United website or directly via BOINC.

Thanks for replying.

At present, 11 lines of Einstein@Home are running, and 1 is waiting to run. Also, 2 lines of Rosetta@Home are running. The other installed projects are:

Asteroids@Home
Cosmology@Home
LHC@Home
Milkyway@Home
Universe@Home
climateprediction.net
GPUGRID
RNA World
Citizen Science Grid

I hope this helps.

It looks like you added these projects with the tools>add project menu. Science united will only recognise the work you do from projects you add via their site.

Personally I would delete the Science United project manager and stick with what you have. Don't know if you also need to go to their site and delete your account to stop the emails.

I installed Citizen Science directly through BOINC, and I also created an account with them.

Citizen Science Grid is considered a DEAD project for over a year now it has not been sending any work and it's Project Administrator / Scientist has not responded to any forum postings or direct message attemps.

You might as well detach from the project and save your internet bandwidth for something else.

Yes, CSG is an umbrella project, which means they send a variety of WUs from a variety of projects.
Personally I would just stick with the projects themselves. It gives you much higher control over what you're working on (like, if you care about DNA research and wildlife, but not so much about weather research, you can add only the projects you want to donate research to). But even if you do like all projects, BAM allows you to prioritize each project.
For instance, give one project a value of 100, and another project a value of 1000, the second project will run 10WUs, for every 1 WU of the first project (on average).

If it's a dead project, why am I getting periodic emails as I described in an earlier posting on this thread?

The answer to your question about these emails si contained in the second line below:
I am also receiving periodic e-mails: Dear vev46:

(I've highlighted the relevant bit.)
Quite simply, the message is from Science United, not from any of the science projects you have connected to. Science United is a sort of manager that is based on BOINC, and is the strongly highlighted alternative to the "real" BOINC that you have installed.

Uh no, Science United is an account manager. It uses BOINC, but any trouble you have with SU is best reported to its developer: https://scienceunited.org/su_help.php
