What was happening around the time it changed? Did you sleep/turn off the machine or was it part way through an uninterrupted run?

Depending on the project, different tasks will save the work to a checkpoint at various intervals. If the computer is turned off, it will go back to the last checkpoint prior to that.

Some projects have tasks that checkpoint frequently enough that unless you are paying close attention you won't notice. Others it can be several hours work lost or over a day on slow machines for one recent batch from CPDN in testing. (The frequency of checkpoints was increased before that lot went to the main site.)

One thing you could try is to see what happens if you don't shut down until the task has completed (assuming they don't stall before they get there).
Have a look at the checkpoint time on that computer - set it to 3-10 minutes, certainly not hours.
Otherwise you are in the hands of the application developers.

CPDN did have one batch go out where by accident the checkpoints were a lot further apart than normal. I wonder if it is just one particular batch from Rosetta and with future batches things will go back to normal?

If you hibernate the computer instead of shutting down, that problem will never happen.
There are WU's on WCG for example, that has hours between checkpoints (depending on computer of course), so when running those, hibernate is the only way to stop them from jumping back hours, if you want to "pause" the computer.
