I am curious. For some years I have been happily running BOINC and SRBase amongst others with no issues at all on a number of computers.
Yesterday SRBase decided, on one of my Windows 10 PCs to lose all interest in CPU tasks. It's happy with GPU ones, but it doesn't even request CPU tasks.
Worth saying that there are plenty of tasks available for the SubProject I am currently interested in (Riesel Base - short) and until yesterday I was getting plenty of them. I do still get plenty of GPU tasks.

On this machine SRBase is currently the main project with a resource share of 200, and only one active CPU project competing with it which has a resource share of 0. This fallback project is getting tasks as would be expected if there were no available non-zero resource share projects WUs available, i.e. I get just the one per CPU thread for this backup project.

On the SRBase site I do have a separate preferences setting for this PC but it clearly selects the SubProject and says it allows CPU tasks - I have been in and reconfirmed these settings by clicking them to be sure.

In the BOINC Manager log all I see for SRBase is "Requesting new tasks for NVIDIA GPU"

I do play with cc_config, and app_config, but I there is nothing in there to stop me from getting CPU tasks, and I didn't change them yesterday anyway. I do have entries for each SubProject but I have since paired app_config down to the following with no joy.

<app_config>
<project_max_concurrent>14</project_max_concurrent>
<app>
<name>srbase7</name>
<max_concurrent>11</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app>
<name>TF</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

The log file when I start BOINC shows the following extracts.
09/08/2020 08:35:44 | SRBase | Max 14 concurrent jobs
09/08/2020 08:35:44 | SRBase | srbase7: Max 11 concurrent jobs
09/08/2020 08:35:44 | SRBase | TF: Max 2 concurrent jobs

In BoincStats BAM! the Host clearly shows SRBase is selected and CPU is allowed - I have selected and re-clicked to ensure it is not an "unset default" I have no BAM Work Preferences or Group set on the Host, and I have synchronised with BoincStatsBAM! many times.

This may or may not be a red herring, but yesterday I made a small foray into the world of VMs by creating a couple of Win10 VMs and a couple of Ubuntu VMs. This was not done for the purposes of BOINC but it struck me that while I have them I could just run some NCI tasks on them. I am assuming that this has caused the problem but I can't see a way out of it as the problem continued even when I shut down the VMs.

I suppose my question comes down to his - are there any additional ways that people can think of to restrict access to CPU tasks for a project that I haven't thought of? Sorry this was long and rambling - I was trying to answer all the subsequent questions in advance.
Cheers
Mark

The following are the answers to the techie questions that the forum asks me to provide so unless you are very interested and think you can help I'd stop reading now, always assuming you've gotten this far! Many thanks either way.

Which BOINC version you run (See Help->About BOINC in BOINC Manager). 7.16.7
Post the first 40 - 100 lines from your BOINC Event Log (CTRL+SHIFT+E), including it showing what your BOINC is doing, which project tasks it is running.

I think that kicking off a VM has upset a number of projects as there are several which are showing "computer id not assigned". Normally this message is shown in the interval between trying to create a new computer on a single project and the project actually assigning an id number. This could mean that the id for the computer has been split into two, one for the computer that has the GPU, and resides outside the VM, and one without the GPU that resides within the VM environment, the latter being the "new" computer.
It might be worth asking a question over on SRB to see if they can shed any light on the matter.

(Aside - One of the projects that is showing "id not assigned" is SETI@Home, this project is currently hibernating with no work being distributed, or completed work being accepted as all tasks that were in the field would have timed out last month.)

"computer id not assigned" means that the host has never, ever, managed to contact the scheduler for the project in question. There are five projects in this state:

09/08/2020 08:36:16 | http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/ | Fetching scheduler list
09/08/2020 08:36:25 | BOINC@TACC | Fetching scheduler list

Each in turn returned an error.

BURP and CAS are old projects which have possibly stopped functioning: they are no longer in the official list (but may be kept by BAM! 'just in case').
SETI has been moving servers around while hibernating, and forget to install a new scheduler on the machine now assigned to that role.
TACC is 'down for maintenance'.

BURP still exists, but is in hibernation as well. From Janus, its admin:
quick update on the current situation:
- Blender 2.80 was ready and deployed to the farm
- Corona virus took 2020 out of the calendar
- BURP is essentially in maintenance mode until the end of the year
