Hi guys,

I am at presently writing FAQs for BOINC. At the moment I am doing the "How do I install BOINC?" question and while I have no problems with writing it for Windows, I could use your help writing it for Linux (standard) and the Mac.

Oh, the same question for the inevitable "How do I attach to a project?" question. ;-)

Who wants to help me out?

With help from my good buddy Neil Munday, who set up space on his server and allowed me again to use his splendid Open Source FAQ writing software, I have worked the last couple of days on a new BOINC FAQ. This site is not to replace the Wiki, it's merely a tool for you who help, who look for help and who are just wondering about where to find help.

It's a small collection of FAQs at this moment, but I didn't see the need to first make it complete before putting it on the web. It can and will be added to over the next couple of weeks, if not years.

The link to it is http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php

I am on the look out for co-writers.
If you have any expertise in writing FAQs, if you can explain things in a reasonably easy way, please contact me and I'll see to it you get a moderator account.

My email address can be found under the About option in the top right of the screen.

The email address is also there if you want anything added, changed, replaced or just want to talk to me. :-)

Jord.

BOINC FAQs are now updated to sport almost all errors BOINC can throw at you, with a small explanation and at points what you can do to get rid of that error.

The TOP 3 of most looked at FAQs for this week is:

1. What are credits? Can I use them?

2. Can I merge accounts?.

3. CPU Usage Percentage, how does it work?

Update, January 4th, 2007
Neil informed me yesterday that he's got most of the multilingual FAQ software under test on his own system. So far it looks good. He is now interested in which languages you people want. This far we'll go for the English version, German and Dutch. We could still use writers/translaters.

You can always leave a message that you want to translate FAQs or be part of the team in this thread on the Mundayweb forums

No more English FAQ writers needed. Dex, Jorden, mo.v, Neil and Ozzfan write the English FAQs. For the moment these are enough.

John Keck has volunteered to be the English Proof Reader/Editor.

But we can still use some German and other language FAQ writers.
Cori, Dotsch, Hermann and Jakob Creutzfeld will translate the English->German FAQs and write the new German ones. If you want to be part of that team, please contact me.

I haven't got a definitive German Proof Reader/Editor yet.

Dutch FAQs will come as well, written and translated by Jorden. (that's me ;))
But even here I could use help.

Question for you all... What are you missing from the FAQs that you want added?
Easy question, difficult to answer perhaps. :-)

I'm having a very hard time figuring out how to set up a team on Boinc .... on the Stanford Folding At Home (FAH) its straight forward. In fact it almost seems that FAH is deliberately setup with a team focus where as Boinc is not. Just an observation ....

The big deal about this is that I work at a high school and would like to have a school team as part oof a focus point on science and technology

Go to front page of relevant project, click 'teams', then click 'create a team'. If you look at your other thread you'll see a more detailed description posted yesterday.

I've been running BOINC Manger in Service mode on WinXP a little over a month. At work, I'm on a Windows network and the admin enforces monthly password changes. No work is performed now after the login pw change took place. How do I update the pw so the service mode runs correctly?

Without uninstalling and reinstalling, this isn't possible, as far as I know.

BOINC 6.0 (coming in the Fall of 2007) will only install as a service and will not need a password, yet since that's still a bit far away, I'll ask the devs if there's a way around uninstalling and reinstalling.

Answer from Rom Walton: (if you have admin powers)
- yeah, just startup the services administrator tool
- double-click on boinc
- switch to the logon tab
- and change the password

Thanks, that appears to have worked. I'll verify when I come in tomorrow morning.
