Hello Everyone,

Just built a new computer with a MSI 1660 Super and after doing some quick research online I believe my GPU has coil whine. It is a very high pitched noise coming from the GPU, it stops instantly if I halt the project in boinc using the GPU. Sometimes the GPU will be fine under 95% load, and others the whine will start up at 40% load. I am using Open Hardware Monitor.

From what I can find online there does not seem to be much I can do other than reach out to the manufacturer about a possible replacement. Has anyone experienced coil whine and or have any tips?

Thanks,

Use MSI afterburner or EVGA, to cut the power by 20% or so.
It'll reduce coil whine drastically.
Compensate by overclocking. Quite often you can run close to stock speeds, even with a 20% lower power output.
Second is, to increase your fan speed.
The coil whine is actually the capacitors expanding and shrinking at high frequencies.
A coil is electrically the opposite of a capacitor, so increasing load on the fan motors will soften the noise a bit as well (but increases fan noise).
Usually fan noise is quite acceptable below 2500-3000RPM (~66-85 % of fan speed on most GPUs).

I downloaded afterburner and adjusted the fan settings, but left power consumption the same. It has been 6/7 hours now and no coil whine.

Thank you for the tip.
