Interesting phenomenon with new box. - monitor kept turning off. Several re-installs of the OS later I worked out the issue. The Gold PSU is too efficient.. I have monitor, printer and a couple of other things plugged in to an energy saving multi socket for mains which if there is nothing running on the master socket then the others turn off. Despite having a 16 core Ryzen9 the draw when idling is not enough for the multi socket to think anything is plugged int! Monitor now plugged in to another outlet! |

My new laptop uses less power when, switched on but idle, than in sleep mode. |

Glory - just found two BT Openreach surveyors wandering round my courtyard. I was able to help them with the complex mish-mash of Victorian freeholds. Upper floors are owned by different people from the ground floor, and they need a wayleave. I might get full fibre this year... But grumble - not until the end of the year. We're the last corner of the exchange area to be converted, and they're only just starting. |

But grumble - not until the end of the year. We're the last corner of the exchange area to be converted, and they're only just starting.Still not sure what is going on here. Our ISP piggy backs of Talk Talk who in turn piggy back of BT. Talk Talk say our street has full fibre now but our own provider doesn't. It is only in the past couple of weeks that Talk Talk site says they have it for our street so it may be their own customers are getting priority? |

Bit of a milestone today my existing "POTS"(Plain old Telephone Service) phone line has gone totally digital. When(and mostly if) I finally get fibre to my flat the old copper cables and a whole way of communicating will be gone forever. My job on leaving school was as TTA (Trainee technician apprentice) for Post Office Telephones, later BT, now EE. I can vividly remember the first time I entered my local ATE (automatic telephone exchange) central office I believe across the pond, This was in 1968, while there was some new equipment, two whole floors had Strowger step by step equipment that was installed in 1938. In my life time I have seen the old "step by step" system, replace by electronic, then digital and now VOIP the difference being that all the previous systems required a pair of copper wires all the way from the exchange, central office, to the phone, a physical connection, full VOIP does not, just some form of connection to the internet, be it a fibre cable or even 5G broadband. End of an era. |

I wonder how much raw copper metal has been used over the decades of building POTS? What sort of cash windfall will EE receive when they're ready to pull it all out and sell it for scrap? |

Battery installed. Since calibration completed yesterday evening, no electricity drawn from grid. One problem, both app and monitoring via computer show we are currently exporting 5.4KW to the grid. On a system that has a theoretical maximum output of 5.2KW that is not very believable, especially as car is being charged. Electrician contacted maker of inverter and battery, seems there is a duplicate serial number for inverter so I am getting information on someone else's system. He thinks they will do a firmware update to change id of one or other inverter though electrician wonders if a typo by installer of other system may be behind it? |
